I have been playing RISK since the mid 80s and have owned quite a few boards. I had a mid 90s board and it was destroyed one night (Don't Ask), so I order another. First off it was difficult to find a cannon/horse/infantry version. The space ships/arrows/blocks/and other incarnations are not to my liking. I find this version and have it two days later. This version is FAIL.
1) NO MISSION CARDS! Seriously? No mission cards? How am I going to play $20 buy in drunk RISK?
2) THE CARDS ARE MADE OF THIN PAPER! Seriously? The older versions were card stock. These were laughable!
3) NO SEPARATE ARMY HOLDERS! It is one chink of plastic holding all the armies. No playing with them during lulls in battle. No organizing and arranging them guarding your beer... this is unacceptable!

HOTFIX

1) eBay seller sell the old cards COMPLETE with mission cards for a few buck. WIN

DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION. You will be VERY dissapointed!

this newer version of risk plays with stars as card trade in value, after buying said "new version" i was quickly disappointed, we did not play it once and returned it to the store and began a search for the original 80's version my father once owned

Do not buy this edition if you are an old fan of Risk.

1. There are only five sets of armies.

2. There are no country cards to deal or trade in (the cards have stars on them and if you collect a certain number of stars you can trade them in.

3. The cards are poor quality.

If you use a set of cards from an older edition and don't need 6 players, it is fine. But I wish I had known that before I bought it.

Someone already created a review about how fake this game is, but just to make sure everyone knows. This game may be called Risk, but it is not Risk. I actually cannot believe that they are allowed to call it that. Monopoly has like 50 versions, but they are all the same game. Therefore imagine my surprise when I opened it and it is an incomplete game. Make sure you have never played the old school version if you buy this, as you will only be filled with disappointment.

After reading all of the negative reviews I decided to write one of my own.

First, it's not the same game. After learning the rules and playing a few times I can say it is fun. To many people try to compare it to the old game and it isn't that game. Still it is fun just the same.

The major differences is reinforcements. As has been said, the cards now use stars that can be exchanged for reinforcements. Reinforcements are much harder to obtain. So gone are the days of massive army vs. massive army. The game still requires strategy and in some cases more so than the original. The cards are a bit flimsy but if proper care is taken these will be fine.

Last weekend I played with my dad and brother which I haven't done since I was a kid. It was a blast. All in all, on it's own merits, this is a very fun game - but it is very different from the original. But, since the map is the same (a little bigger) you can easily play with the old cards and old rules.

Oh, and for those complaining that this does not have the objective cards - objects cards were not included in the original game of Risk. These came later. Just enjoy the game for what it is.

It's a shame they ruined such a great game to try to make it cheaper! There are so many problems with this version, where do I begin? (1) There are only 5 teams instead of 6, (2) There are NO mission cards!, (3) The board and artwork are inferior to previous versions, (4) There are no piece-holders. I could probably think of more things wrong with it if I had more time, but these are already more than enough for me to regret having bought it.

If you want the REAL game of Risk, search for Risk 1993, 1998, or 2003 editions.

Do yourself a favor and steer clear of this pathetic "updated" version of risk. Hasbro took something that was perfect, and completely ruined it. The pieces no longer have cases; the sixth army is missing. The cards are printed on what appears printer paper. They've even screwed up the rules for how many armies you get when you turn in cards.

I don't know what they were thinking - perhaps they were trying to save money on plastic? At any rate, this feels like a cheep knockoff, except that it's not cheap!

Get an older version from eBay, they cost less, and are much higher quality

My wife and I got this game for Christmas. We finally opened it up, excited to be able to play one of our favorite games. Unfortunately, whoever was in charge of choosing the colors for the pieces was a complete imbecile. We started to get the board set up, only to realize that even with all 4 lights on in the living room, the blue, grey, and green-grey colors are almost completely indistinguishable from each other. We finally gave up without even being able to play. What an absolute waste. They really couldn't come up with 5 contrasting colors? How about White? Pink? Orange? Unbelievable.
