We get this game out when we want some excitement and also want a good ice breaker game. There are several categories, but we usually just play on 'everything' so we get a good mix. There will be some clues that you have no idea what they mean so lay the rules out up front if you are allowed to skip or if you have to go with it and maybe give 'sounds like' clues. My wife likes to keep hitting Next until she finds one that she can do... cheater! ;-P

Anyhow, I would recommend this game for $25-$30, but not at these crazy prices that I've seen lately on Amazon. $50???? No way. Target has this on clearance right now, so try them if prices are still crazy on here. Another option would be to look for the Scrabble edition. From what I read, there is nothing "Scrabble" about it.... just 1,500 new words.

There appear to be two versions of this item for sale on Amazon. This review is specifically for item 05712. First, the product packaging I received did not look like the photo provided by "Dwight". It was identical to the first two photos provided by Amazon.
This product has the lit display. There is notation on the front that says "Class 1 LED product". This helps indicate which of these versions has the illuminated display.
We've owned three of these. We've taken it to friend's houses to play and often end up leaving it with them since they love it so much. Once we've played this one a few times I'll post again if we find any "phrases for 2009" as the description indicated.
As for the repeated phrases, yes, we've seen a couple of repeats but with different players involved in the game the way people give different clues makes it nearly impossible to know if it's a repeat or a new phrase. You'll love this game.
Our 7 year old enjoys it as much as our 60+ relatives.

The ONLY game that will get even the quiet ones loud and laughing, and the "I don't want to play" or "I'll just watch" people playing! You Cant be in the same room and not through out a guess! This one is the crowd pleaser. Family and friend favorite. It's set up for teams but if there's an odd man out we use them as a floater that can guess for either team at any time. After a few cocktails we are laughing and talking so much about it in between we stop keeping score because Everyone wins with this game! The ultimate goal is fun and it happens every single time no matter the people :)

This is a great game for parties. Even better if you throw the rule book away. Turn on the timer and start passing it around. Each person gives the clues and when someone answers correctly, pass it to the next person. When the timer buzzes, that person gets some grief, gives grief to the person who was too slow, takes a drink, or whatever. No pieces, paper, dice, etc to worry about. It's fast paced and easy for a party.

One time I had the rule book in hand and tried to explain the rules to 8 impatient people. Didn't work. I tried to get my kids playing by the rules and we gave up. Just passing it around was a lot of fun in both cases. We joked that everyone got to go home with a trophy.

We have given this toy as gifts and played with it with many friends and everybody has appreciated and enjoyed playing with it. We have an older version and a new one. The older one has easier words but the buttons were not labeled well. The newer version has more phrases so it is a little more difficult but the problem is that the tiny electronic screen is hard to see unless the machine is held right in front of you. This does prevent your neighbors on either side "accidentally" seeing the word or phrase. The buttons on the new one are very clearly marked so mistakes don't happen. The older one had a voice that would announce the score of each team and at the end would exclaim "team 1 (or 2) wins!". The new one just displays this information on the previously mentioned tiny screen. Overall this is a game that is well worth having at home.

A friend found it at another Target store so much cheaper and bought it for me not knowing I had ordered it. I tried to return the one purchased at Amazon but it seems to be an impossible task. Don't know if I am too crazy about using Amazon again. Catch Phrase is a fun game to play in a group. I wanted it for a Christmas gift.
