Battleship is fun to play - but this set is poorly designed and made. I read the reviews of the current Battleship version where people are having trouble with the pegs falling out so I thought I'd try this version instead. No better. The holes for the pegs are not tight enough so the pegs are loose. It's not such a big deal on the bottom part where your own ships are but on the vertical part where you are marking your shots the pegs wobble and you have to be too careful to keep them from falling out. Also, the cases are red and blue, which is fine. But the game board is a clear - light gray plastic and the letters and numbers that indicate the rows are also just clear plastic and are very difficult to read. I'll keep it because we want to play Battleship - but a moron designed it - and he should re-design it.

Battleship could be as fun as it always was, but not when playing with this version. I returned it to Amazon and bought an old one on "electronic bay".
As others have noted, the pegs are not a good fit for the holes. They are so loose that, on the vertical part of the board, they hang down at an angle instead of sticking out straight and fall out if the board is bumped (sooo frustrating for the little ones who were super excited to play a new game).

This version is pretty much like the one I grew up with BUT what were they thinking with those loose pegs? I have a bouncy little boy and the pegs barely hang in there. The clear letters and numbers are difficult to read but just get your permanent marker out and they are just fine, not that big a deal. I love the storage cases and unlike others have mentioned ours seem to close securely and also have not closed during game play so ultimately the three stars is about the pegs and nothing else. I really hate those loose pegs. We're putting our heads together and trying to find an answer to that problem, maybe a little super glue at the tips or melting the tips slightly for a tighter fit on the board.

I had originally purchased the electronic version, but we were very disappointed by the lack of ability to input the locations of the ships. Too much work for no great return. Because of the way it was set up, it was too easy for your opponent to "accidentally" look at the locations of your ships. However, the kids seemed to like the game in general so I went ahead and bought the classic version. The game board is actually larger than the electronic version - one extra horizontal and one extra vertical row. Ships fit in well. Fairly easy to read the letters and numbers. Great storage space for the pegs and ships in each game board. Easy to learn game - can play fairly quickly in about 20 minutes - great family game.
My one only complaint is that the pegs don't really fit well into the holes - they kind of just set in there loosely. One bump of your board and the pegs are bound to fall out.

While I love everything retro, this game was a disappointment. Like other reviews, the pegs are slippery and fit too loosely in the holes. Also the game itself easily folds shut and doesn’t lock in place when open, so during a game with my son, we had to restart twice because his case closed with the tiniest tap and all the pegs fell out. I am disappointed. The version with black cases and blue grids are better made.

No frills classic game. Good for travel. Learn the advanced variations for adults and teens.

We bought the retro version because we didn't see a need for anything fancy. It's Battleship! The game design makes it easy for travel and fun to play. My only complaint is that the embossed letters and numbers on the plastic can be difficult to read in all but the brightest rooms. Of course, you can count or use the alphabet, but we painted them on to improve contrast.
For older kids and adults I strongly encourage reading the rules for advanced game variations that will bring more skill/memory into play. Timed variations aren't mentioned in the rules, but with a bit of imagination and a chess clock you can add some extra excitement.

I really wanted to love this retro styled battleship but I should have read the reviews because the pegs fall out and it renders it completely useless! Just one tap or movement of your setup and all your hits and misses fall out and you have to start the game over! 😫 The overall quality besides the ill-fitting pegs were good but I’m so sad we had to return it and get a different version.
