Players Show Off Their TalentsThe Cranium Game includes 600 mind (and body) challenges. Players team up and complete hilarious activities from 4 categories. Since the activities span talents, every player can have a chance to show off what they're good at -- whether it's spelling, sculpting, puzzling, acting, or humming. The Cranium Game is outrageous fun for everyone. Simply cruise around the gameboard completing color-coded activities within the 1-minute time limit. Reach the Cranium Central space and complete one final challenge to win. |
Everyone ShinesThe Cranium game lets players show off their individual talents. Want to be center stage? Then act and hum in the Star Performer category. For those with an artistic flair -- sketch, sculpt, and draw stick-figure masterpieces with activities in the Creative Cat category. The Data Head category is for players who know all sorts of facts. Last but not least, clever wordsmiths can show their stuff with the Word Worm questions. Pick a category, complete a challenge, and win! |
Fun for PartiesThe Cranium Game can be great for parties because players team up to win. With 4 categories to choose from, every player can have the chance to show off their skills. Spelling a word backwards, drawing with their eyes closed, and solving a puzzle are just of few of the activities they might do. It's hilarious and outrageous fun! |

I bought the $21 version of the game, which is significantly less expensive than some of the older available versions.
Pros:
- The materials seem to be of decent quality.
- They've added some new mini-games from the version that I remember-- one that I sort of like is called Mind Meld-- teammates secretly list things related to a specific theme/topic (e.g., Spa Treatments was the example we had) and win if they match on at least one item. My wife and daughter enjoyed that one; I think it's perfect for families because they get a kick out of seeing how they think alike (or not!).
- They shrunk down the board, so it's 25% of its original size. It simplifies the game and setup, which I didn't mind. I don't remember the old rules exactly, but I think it did result in getting rid of an element of the old game where players could "fast track"-- it's been a while since I played, so I had forgotten about that and really didn't miss it. The board now is a straight loop around, with purple Cranium spaces acting as "wild cards" (the team chooses the type of question they want).
CONS:
- The questions. Seriously, who play-tested this? We had a few softball questions, but most of them are pretty difficult and not that much fun (we had to institute a mercy rule where you could roll if you missed three times on a space). There were a bunch of questions we had to skip because my girls were unfamiliar with the names or places-- I can't fault the game makers for that; the recommended age is 16+ and that's probably why-- but being over 16 was just as useless for a lot of the questions.
- As I mentioned above, they've added a bunch of new mini-games from the version I remember, and they're hit or miss. There's a new game where one player has to use a teammate as a "puppet" to pantomime an activity or phrase. It's a fun idea in theory, but aside from being extremely difficult in some cases (Waxing Your Eyebrows?), it doesn't work very well for teams of two, where the person being used as the puppet can't actually see what's being pantomimed. Another game called Odd Couple gives a list of things and asks you to identify the two that don't belong-- again, it's a good idea, but the questions we got were unexpectedly tough (example: identify two dishes that aren't national dishes-- I couldn't identify what ANY of the dishes were, much less which nation they were from).
- Like the board, the rule book was shrunken down from what I can remember, and there were some important details missing-- for example, the specifics of turn order after an All Play is involved (does it count as a team's turn regardless of who wins?). I recall this being spelled out in the old rules, so it's a detail that was considered before. I'm not sure why it's not addressed in this version (btw-- I don't believe All Play does count as a turn-- if you draw an All Play on your turn, you can draw again afterwards regardless of who won the All Play; it's effectively a bonus turn for the winner). Also not clear-- do you have to roll a purple to reach the center space? Or can you go there if you roll any color that's not left on the track? Again, a detail that probably should have been addressed.
- This is sort of nitpicky, but the storage tray for the cards is annoying-- the decks are pretty thick-- the box says there are 600 cards total. It's difficult getting the cards out of the tray when setting up; it would have been nice to have a deeper cutaway or something at the side of the wells where the cards are stored so you could get more of the deck without having to dig down into the tray-- the tray's made of a thin plastic that I'm afraid isn't going to hold up very well if you have to do that every time. I should clarify that I'm only talking about getting the cards out during setup-- during gameplay when you can stand the cards up in the tray for easy access it works just fine, but they can't be stored like that.
So... I love Cranium and wholeheartedly recommend the game in general-- it gets everybody up and active and it's always good for a few laughs. But the execution in this version seems to be a little lackluster. If you're not very budget-conscious and don't mind paying extra (some of the other versions are more than twice the cost of this one) I might recommend buying one of the older versions where the questions and games seem to have been more well thought out.
The original game is worth 2-3 times the price, spend it. Half the cards have ridiculous questions/answers. Just randomly picked one; Silently draw the answer...hint is Expression...ok, fun-NO...answer you need to silently draw....Gym, Tan, Laundry. Seriously, WTH! Someone was playing a drinking game when they created this version. Ours may become a drinking game. While isolating with the fam (whom I love) during CV-19 drama you may want to keep the frustration level to a minimum, this version is not helpful.
