Upwords takes the likes of Scrabble to new heights. Players get more power out of every word and create more play possibilities. Players can build from words crossword puzzle-style or by stacking letters on top of tiles already on the board. The challenge is to make new words each time. For example, "stack" becomes "snack," then "snapshot." If it sounds like 3-D Scrabble, there's more to know. Scoring is simpler: each tile earns two points, and each stacked tile earns one. The usual Nos apply: no capitalized, hyphenated, or abbreviated words, etc. The set comes with 100 letter tiles, tile racks for two to four players, and a plastic game board. --Lynne Sampson

Amazon is referring to this game as a "toy," but it is a "toy" for children, as well as adults. I bought Upwords for myself and I am 46 yrs old. I play it with adults. And it is challenging and fun. It is a different spin on Scrabble. Anyone who likes word games, such as Scrabble, will like Upwords. [Another game, from the 1960's, that is no longer on the market,"Scribbage," is another one that word game lovers would enjoy in their collection.}

The older version of the game was better in regard to color and maybe piece size (I don't quite remember). The new one has red letter pieces. I got used to it, but still prefer the old, white (or off-white?) pieces. The manufacturer did the same thing with Rummikub, reducing the quality of the tiles.

My durability rating is based on the potential to lose letter tiles. As far as "breakage" goes, it doesn't have anything to break (unless the tile board is stomped on).

Anyway, it is a great game and I'd recommend it.

"Upwords" is fun for young people and adults alike. My mother played it for years - - - even when she was 97 years old - - - and she almost always won! This game is similar to "Scrabble" but I think it's even more fun because it's basically a three-dimensional version of "Scrabble." You can build words not only horizontally and vertically on the board, but also add layers upwords (hence, the name "Upwords")! This means you have a lot more opportunities to create more words and add points to your score. For young people, "Upwords" can really help them with spelling and vocabulary and it's fun!

This is a great game for everyone. Especially good for younger people since they can spell "shorter" words and still win the game. Great positive reinforcement for spelling and reading.
I do like the original game better- the tiles are bigger. I think the newer version is not as well made and I don't like the smaller tiles. And where is the bag for the letters?? I bought a newer version because I wanted to leave a game at my mountain cabin where we have no TV and play games at night. I'm going to look for a version of the game where the game pieces are larger and better made. The game is still worth buying and playing with kids and adults. We've been playing this game for over 20 years and never play Scrabble anymore since we play Upwords all the time. My family loves the game and we highly recommend it!

Upwords and onwords

This is my most favorite crossword style games, which typically plays in far less time than the also beloved Scrabble. In Upwords, up to all but one of the original letters of already placed words may be covered, up to five tiles high, so the game may take unexpected twists and turns.

Supervised young children enjoy placing the (small) tiles onto the newer, more compact board, adding complexity as they learn -- such as sorting the letters, spelling out their own name, and forming simple words.

Tip for those more used to Scrabble: Think up and think corners for higher scoring! I hope you have as much fun as I always do with this game. SJB

I'm don't usually complain, but I was seriously disappointed in my recent purchase of the classic Upwords game. It was advertised as being made by Hasbro and cost twice what the new brightly colored version costs. Instead I got a knockoff. It did not have the sturdy Hasbro stand and the box had a different picture than the one online.

If I'd paid $15 for it rather than $30, I'd be okay with it. But it's not a $30 set and not what was shown. And it's probably illegal. "Hasbro" didn't appear anywhere on the box.

PS: I complained to ifunsale and today received an offer for a full refund. They did not know it was a knockoff and stopped selling it after they learned of it, they said. So they made it right. But I am asking only for half refunded, since that's what I would have paid for the red and blue version if I'd known this one had the flimsy stand and was a knockoff.
