Product description
Players put their charm, quick thinking, and persuasive personality to the test with the creative and hilarious Snake Oil game. One player is the “customer,” and the rest of the players are "salesmen" trying to convince the customer to purchase their product over the others. The products to sell are made by combining two of the Word cards, and players have to gear their sales pitch to the customer's character. Selling a snow machine to a caveman would be quite different from selling one to a rock star! Lie, fib, and make up some ridiculous stories in order to collect the most Customer cards. After each player has been the customer once, the player with the most Customer cards wins! Original Game by Jeff Ochs and Patricia Hayes Kaufman. For example, the customer card might be "vampire," or "wrestler," or "librarian."
The snake-oil salespeople take turns giving a pitch to the customer. My six random cards might be words like: suitcase, yawn, closet, college, terror, secret, or any combination of various words that I have drawn from the card pile. I pick two of those words and try to create a product that my customer would want to buy. Maybe "terror closet" might be an item that a vampire customer would want? So, I spend about 30 seconds trying to convince my vampire customer to buy my "terror closet." I can make up anything I want about my terror closet. "It's terrifying. It has a trapdoor for your victims to fall into. It's a lead-proof closet so no sunlight can get in to burn you. It's the perfect place to keep all of your vampire capes," etc.
Meanwhile, the other snake-oil salespeople also have their variety of cards and they will come up with an item that the customer might like better.
The combinations are nonsensical and it requires quick-thinking to come up with something creative to pitch to the customer. Players take turns giving their product pitch to the customer and then the customer decides who wins that round.
I purchased this game because it was recommended to me by a child psychologist to help my child increase her cognitive processing speed. (To help her think and verbalize her thoughts more quickly!) My daughter found it engaging and interesting. And - I'm so glad, as a parent, that it was fun for me as well. We will definitely play this again.
Personally, games like Rotten Apples, Cards Against Humanity, What Do U Meme, and games like it REALLY make me cringe. The designers probably had a really fun time making it, all you do is stick cards together and laugh at them. In Snake Oil, the cards are funny but generic and it's entirely up to you to make something of your hand.
Essentially you'll get cards, put them together and call it a product, and then you'll try to sell your product. Each person you are selling to has different needs and vices, so in trying to "sell" to them you'll have to be a good salesperson and work that into your pitch. I love playing this with my friends and family (all adults) but when I have kids, I'm definitely getting them to play this as it would teach good self-esteem and public speaking skills.
If you enjoy it, I would also recommend FUNemployed as it has a similar playstyle.
