No spoilers in this post, but I will be talking about the rules immediately out-of-the-box.

One of my friends gathered us together to play this game, explaining it's "like Risk" but with "permanent effects, so that the game changes forever every time you play". Succinct, yet accurate.
What this description doesn't capture (and what's impossible to understand until you actually play), is just *how* the board changes and how *mind-blowing* it is.

The default rules are very similar to vanilla Risk, with a few additions. The win conditions are relaxed (instead of capturing the entire board, you gather four red star tokens in various ways... games run 1-2 hours). In addition, there are five races to choose from with various perks (+1 to defense rolls, extra manueverability, etc).

To give an idea of how zany this game is: each race starts with two possible perks. You choose one for each race and literally throw the other in the trash. In the first five minutes you have made a permanent decision that permanently alters how your version of the game is played. Forever.

The key to the game's evolution is in two parts: game-to-game and via the envelopes. Every time a game ends, the winner and the hold-outs get to make a decision. The winner might name a continent, giving him a bonus when he controls it. He might found a major city, giving him recruitment bonuses in the territory. The hold-outs get to found minor cities, or make territories more valuable. This changes how diplomacy and expansion works in later games. There are also "scar cards", which players can use to permanently improve or weaken a territory, by placing a sticker on the board.

The second part is the sealed envelopes in the game box.

This is an absolutely incredible board game. I can not speak for the entire length of the 15 games but we are through multiple and I have never felt as much excitement to continue playing. One thing that must be done is do not search around on the internet for the spoilers, the game comes with 6 locked card pouches that can only be opened at certain times, thus changing the game drastically. Although it may not be fun playing a second time wiht a new version, the changes they have made to the tried and true risk set up have greatly increased the speed and strategy of the game. Do not believe that all 15 games will take as long as a normal game of risk, the end game is no longer world domination for most of the games, and thus the games happen much faster. The rule book is dense but once getting through it (around an hourish) we played about three games in around 3.5-4 hours (20 minutes-1 hour - 2 hours).

The only con is that you must have the same players play each of the 15 games. This makes it way more fun but also disqualifies some people as some do not have a consistent way to play with 3-5 other people. We are playing with my two brothers and one of their's wife before they leave for the holidays. It has been fun enough that we have made preliminary plans to fly out to their home to continue the game as we will not finish during the holidays. People may believe 50 dollars may be a little steep for a game you can only play "once", though I would argue that you will get around 35-45 hours of playtime out of it, and around 1 dollar per hour for multiple people is pretty good.

We have some extended family up here so we are not allowed to play right now, but am itching to get back into it, it is that engaging and exciting.

This game is amazing.

At first, I was not inclined to like it, because it flies in the face of so many preconceptions. The board is forever changed by the players. Cards get thrown out. Things get destroyed. Forever, irrevocably, just gone. All the players who are there when the board is opened will forever influence how the game is played, and every person who plays it will do the same... win or lose, everyone gets to change the game, everyone has a mark to make.

So this is not for control freaks who cannot let go... fortunately I am a control freak who can let go eventually.

This is not a game to play if you have a group of friends who really don't win or lose with grace,though.. unless that's ok with you. Since you get to mark the board permanently, people who will put obnoxious things on the board might make all the next games obnoxious.

It is complex in some ways, but not badly so. They have taken some of the tediousness out of the game, and made those parts more streamlined. For instance, gone is the process of grabbing every territory on the board in turns at the beginning of the game; which took FOREVER and made gameplay a yawn.

Also, the further you get in the game, the more it changes. There are packets that open when certain game conditions are met, that change the game and the way it is played from then on.

In short, it is an evolving game that is best played with a small amount of friends, for an ongoing campaign that never stops getting interesting or changing. Until the board is filled up, I guess, but I think that might take a long long time.

8/1/13: The only downside for me, is that if you suddenly have someone who doesn't want to play this game, then your progress is halted, unless you can get someone else to join the group. It's a campaign, really, and the board tells a story. When someone decides not to keep going, it's impossible to finish, and it sits languishing in a closet.
