We got this for an extremely good price on one of Amazon's super deal days, plus we had free shipping. We got it at almost 75% off. But I would have paid full price had I known just how much my kids would love it.
We have pop-ups that we put up occasionally for the kids to play in. They rough and tumble, and the things fall over. This play cottage has a metal, more durable frame with zip-up canvas to make it stand on its own. Yes, it can be knocked over. But only if it's intentional. A stiff breeze would send a pop-up flying whereas this thing would absolutely stay put.
I love that it stores inside itself. It basically comes in two large frames, one slightly smaller than the other. When you want to store it away for the day (we keep our's up all the time now), you can just slide the slightly smaller frame into the bigger one. Voila!
Adorable features: dutch door with magnetic clasps - the kids LOVE this feature, several windows, one of which has a curtain you can Velcro open, a chimney from which you can see all the way thru.
And the attention to detail on the fabric - there are roses and vines entwining the roof, part of the floor is made to look like hardwood while the other is supposed to be carpet.
I highly recommend this toy. I am not sure if you need all the furniture that goes with it. It came with an adorable stove, which my kids use to cook their Mr. Potato Heads or stash sippy cups for hiding, but even empty, they will drag their own toys in just to play in a somewhat private place.
Excellent toy! We are extremely satisfied! Also great for role-modeling after mom and dad, so I consider highly educational and great for imagination.
My son, the oldest has autism and we've always felt that pretend play and role playing are important, even if it means he gets to play with "girl stuff" now and then. So we had an even bigger motivator for getting all of this. Despite his usual attention span issues (the opposite of any "normal" seven year old) he was very interactive and really enjoyed this.
Obviously, our girls are in love with it. My youngest is inside of it right now. You can use it with both halves closed like a play house or keep the halves open. With the market next door it's like a mini town! Because of my kid's ages I am always struggling to find things that will entertain the youngest and the oldest. Or be suitable for the youngest but withstand the destruction of the oldest. I was so pleased with the cottage and market, all three are able to enjoy it together for extended times. It has a really broad appeal as far as ages and abilities. It's not super educational by design, but kids can gain so much through pretend play and a lot of educational activities can be combined with it.
I did a lot of hunting online and in stores and found the best prices I could. With the Cottage, Market and just about every accessory available I ended up spending about $165. But even if I had spent twice as much I would feel like it was an excellent deal. I can't even begin to describe all of the sweet, thoughtful little details. I love that the doors have magnets that are strong enough to need a little tug or push to open and stay firmly closed like a real house. The house halves have gorgeous eyelet trim and they slide into each other for easy storage. Or the mail slot in the door that you can really use or the velcroed ties for the sweet little curtains in the cottage... Not to mention the designs on the market and the cottage. I'm quite jealous, I would have treasured such a beautiful play house as a child, and I'd love to live in a cottage just like it now!
I can't speak to the durability, we've only had everything for a few weeks. But it looks like it will wipe clean easily, as long as the messes are reasonable. And the stitching looks really solid. The appliances and nursery are made of a super strong, thick fiberboard. It would probably take quite a big kid sitting on any of it to break or some serious liquid saturation to warp it. All of the pieces lock together very securely and it looks like they'll hold up for a long time. The only downside I can see is that it might difficult to disassemble it all. But who would want to unless they were moving? I like that my oldest can't easily break it all down and lose the pieces and that my kids could play like wild animals for hours on end. I think the cottage and market could withstand any category hurricane my kids could muster in our play room!
The house is made of fabric and not vinyl so it doesn't get hot inside the house like other playhouses. There are windows on 3 sides of the house which they peek out of often while playing inside. It comes with an oven that takes 5 minutes to assemble and personally I think is enough, as too many kitchen items will only cramp the inside. We keep the house closed and use it as a playhouse and it resides in my daughters' room. It does take up quite a bit of space, but the halves do nest together so that saves some space.
My husband and I followed the online video instructions and it took us about an hour as the kids were "helping" us. I highly recommend following the video instructions, they were very clear and easy to follow:
I only wish they had something like this when I was a kid! I see many more years of playtime with this cottage.
