I picked up this version of Risk at Target last week, and immediately fell in love with it as soon as I opened it up. The board design is from the 1975-1980 version, but the armies are the classic wooden pieces. All the armies come in clear plastic containers and the deck comes in it's own box, which they stopped doing in 1975, also the artwork on the cards is from the 1975 version. The board itself is smaller than a regular risk board, but not by much. The wooden box looks great on my board game shelf and it's compact design makes it easier to take to a friend's house than the larger boxes. Also, there's some neat Risk facts printed on the inside of the box lid. As far as the instructions go, they are almost an identical reprint of the original instructions from the 1959 version, which means that you don't have the extra starting armies like with the revised 1963 instructions. All in all, it's my favorite version so far! (i have 9 different versions)

In 2003, Risk changed its rules. Apparently 40+ years of a quality game isn't enough for the company. These new rules stink! However, this classic edition is back to the basics. The game pieces, board, and case are wonderful. Buy this rather than the new edition!

Risk is a great game. I am glad to have a vintage version. It's just as I remember the game from when I was a kid. My kids love it and we're having a blast playing with it.

My only concern is that is arrived with an "Only at" (the symbol of another store) sticker on it. I bought it here on Amazon. We went to this other store for some other things, and I decided to browse the game aisle. The identical game was there, with the "Only at" sticker on it for about 50% less than what I paid here. I was a bit dismayed. It was an Amazon Prime purchase. I guess it's OK for them to play the middle man and make money, but being middle between me and another retail store seems a bit sleazy. Lesson learned for me: shop around a bit.

I didn't bother returning it because by the time I pay to mail it back I won't end up saving too much money and, frankly, I'm a bit lazy. I did think it is worth it to pass on the info, though. Maybe you could save $10 through some research. All I have to do it type a bit while sitting on the couch. I can manage that.

Great game. Get it and conquer the world. I hope that you can learn from my mistake: expect more, pay less.

Risk is a great game. I have never seen the "non-vintage" version, so cannot compare the two. I bought this version, because it was actually cheaper than the plastic version (at Target that is; not on Amazon). I like having wooden game pieces.
The only drawback is what other reviewers commented on: the pink and red pieces are indiscernible in artificial light. I solved this issue by putting black dots with a permanent marker on the pink pieces, but it would have been better if Hasbro had chosen a different color. Quality is OK (at least at the Target price).
As far as playing the game goes: my husband and I have played it a few times, and we like it. It is easy to grasp and fun to play, but I am looking forward to playing it with a larger group, though you can play it with just two people.

I bought the game because the LoTR version I have isn't the Risk we all know, and you can only play four players. This version comes in a nice wooden box. Dont' expect a quality wood or finish since it is a simple game. The game pieces are stored within six separate plastic containers and the cards are contained within a holder. The board opens up and appears easy to damage if you decide to fold it incorrectly.
The rules and pieces are of an earlier version. Six players can play in this version. The pieces provide the biggest issue which consist of some type of oblong pieces and a square pieces. In fact the pieces are unoriginal in a sense unlike later versions where you had Roman numerals. They are constructed of wood.
As for playing, if you don't like these rules then search for other rules or make your own up.

I bought this as a gift, but then returned it when we found another "more suitable" game. Would have kept it if we could have since it's truly vintage and would be wonderful for any collector.

Friend was obsessed. This is nicely packaged and the rules make it simpler than the new versions and quicker from my experience but not by much. We often run out of pieces during longer games when my friend is dominating the board so we need to use other colors to supplement.

I've never enjoyed the modernized Risk games, as I grew up mostly enjoying the old versions (my parents were always big on finding games at flea markets and yard sales). Yep, the game board is just as I remember it. The only thing I miss from the newer ones is the roman numeral pieces from 1980, but I might pick those up separately some time.

Not going to knock a star for it, but these really need a latch or even simple sliding piece of thin metal to hold the box closed. There's even holes on the "bookshelf end" of the box (which is the side it opens on - the right side, when looking at the top label) where it looks like a latch would go (there's a set of holes at the top and bottom corners). Yet nothing. Kinda waiting for the lid to come flying off if I pick it up from the wrong side...
