Product Description

Product Description

Highly detailed 1/48 scale assembly model kit of the Lockheed Martin/Boeing F-22 Raptor, a fifth-generation fighter aircraft (sometimes referred to as generation-five or "gen 5" fighter) currently in squadron service with the United States Air Force. As of 2009, the Raptor is the only known fifth-generation fighter deployed for active service by any nation in the world. The Raptor is a highly advanced air-superiority fighter aircraft that encapsulates the latest in aircraft design technologies that include stealth, supercruise, thrust-vectoring, and the highly advanced AESA radar system, just to name a few. As a fighter aircraft, the Raptor is capable of out maneuvering any generation-four fighter aircrafts in service today and thus seizing complete control of enemy air space. In addition, the Raptor is also a versatile platform that can perform a variety of ground attack and electronic warfare missions. The Raptor is considered by many the single greatest fighter aircraft ever produced to date, and until the Raptor encounters another gen-5 fighter sometimes in the future, it will remained a dominant force in the skies over present and future combat theaters for the U.S. Air Force. This beautifully detailed Hasegawa 1/48 scale assembly kit comes with decals for U.S.A.F. 1FW 94FS "HAT IN THE RING" 1FW Commander Code: FF 1FW 2009. 368 parts.

From the Manufacturer

The Lockheed Martin/Boeing F-22 Raptor is a single-seat, twin-engine fifth-generation fighter aircraft that uses stealth technology. It was designed primarily as an air superiority fighter, but has additional capabilities that include ground attack, electronic warfare, and signals intelligence.

the poor reviews are from people who don't know what they are buying....

This is clearly the finest F22, and probably any aircraft type model produced in the last few years.

It is completely correct to production F22's in every way and completely superior to the Academy product, has amazing body detail, has a very high level of structural detail, and when completely assembled is very solid and professional in look and feel...

When assembled by a very capable hobbyist, it is capable of being a superior museum piece...

a few notes:
- serious models of this type require a great deal of skill time and patience to get a superior result
- this product is not for impatient children or adults... it does not snap together, include paint and cement, come prepainted, get going with a 60 IQ, or even remotely look correct without painting the entire model
- it's a major undertaking to assemble correctly and will consume at least 20 hours of time and numerous days of multiple coat priming , painting etc. for it to look right
- to do this correctly, it will probably cost another $30 in various paints, finishes, detail etchings etc.
- its best to search the internet for modeling forums to find a technique to get the paint / coloring correct on this... painting it to get that F-22 sheen is really hard, so don't rush and find someone who has done it, I've seen some amazing builds on some of the forums that are out there... there is a guy Keeperofsouls2099 who did an unbelievable job on one : google "AeroScale :: F-22 Raptor by Justin McCracken" and you'll see

there is also a FANTASTIC walk through of the assembly at "[...

I've posted pics of my finished model...

I built this "box stock", but still, this is super detailed model - even though it did not include any photo etched parts
1) Each landing gear bay consists of 20+ parts - gear, doors, struts, interior parts, etc.
2) Each missile fin gets a "NO LIFT" decal.
3) Fit and finish are SUPERB, very little putty needed.
4) Took 3 weeks to complete. In comparison, Revell F-15 only took me 1 week to complete.
5) I did the wash in the landing and missile bays, but didn't add weathering, yet. I just wanted to be done for now.
6) But I wish they would have made the 20mm cannon doors to be open or closed.

For the edges - Light Ghost Gray FS36375 (enamel) - added no sheen.
- Let it dry THOROUGHLY for a couple of days, masked the edges using low tack masking tape.
- If you want the edge color to match some of the decals - i.e. between the engines, mix Light Ghost Gray with Radome Tan and flat white - I had to do this because part of the decal between the engines came off a bit and had to fix it. It's really hard to tell the difference between the fix and decal.

Sheeny light gray - 5 parts Light Ghost Gray FS36375 (enamel) + 1 part 5-N Navy Blue USN (SG) (enamel)
Sheeny dark gray - 1 part Light Ghost Gray FS36375 (enamel) + 3 part 5-N Navy Blue USN (SG) (enamel)
- I printed the PDF of the paint instructions on to card stock. Increasing the print size until it matched the model, then cut out the darker gray areas and used it as a template so I can achieve the soft edges.

To add the "sheen" - 5 parts Testors Airbrush Paint, Clear Gloss (Acrylic) + 1 part Parma Faspearl Silver (acrylic) + 3 parts thinner. Airbrushed 3 thin coats.

I have been making model airplanes for years and I must say that this is one of the best models that I have seen in a long time. You truly get what you pay for in this model. While the directions way understate the amount of time you will spend making the model I would recommend this plane to anybody. The pieces are formed and fit with an amazing amount of precision and this turned out to be a beautiful model that is closer to the real thing than any of the other F-22 models on the market. I would highly recommend this plane!!

This is a fantastic kit! Hasegawa is right up there with the highest quality kits available. This kit is normally sold for $90 through the different online retail merchants and even higher (in some cases) than the brick and mortar shops. For a 1/48 kit to have 368 pieces speaks to the amazing detail (most kits this size have under 100) but that is where the quality comes in. I've gone over all the parts trees and the detail is amazing! This is nothing short of fantastic! If I were to have paid $90 for this kit I would be completely satisfied with the quality versus cost. However, with it being in the $30's this is an ABSOLUTE STEAL! I ordered this kit and it arrived within 2 days and was very carefully packaged. After a full inspection I ordered a 2nd kit. If you are an intermediate to advanced modeler then this kit is for you and you can't go wrong with it. If you are a beginning modeler it would be okay to order it but make sure you build a few dozen kits (or whatever it takes) to increase your skill level before you attempt to start this build. If you are a parent thinking this would be a good "toy" for your child DON'T BUY IT! This is neither a toy nor a kit for the beginner.
