This book had so many twists and turns with surprise revelations, constantly keeping me on my toes, and kept me reading into the wee hours of the night. This book had a combination of science fiction and apocalyptic fiction and just good old fashioned great story telling. Joel's writing goes into such detail that you can almost feel yourself crawling through the briars and falling through the waterfalls and rocks. I am not usually an emotional reader but I caught myself laughing out loud one moment and tears in my eyes the next. I guess that is what sets apart great writers, their ability to generate emotions in their readers. Well done!! I look forward to reading his real life story "Impossible Beyond this Point".
In "Hatching the Phoenix Egg", the author demonstrates one ability characteristic of the very best of science fiction and thriller authors - the ability to write the most unlikely of events in such a way that they become not only plausible, but virtually unavoidable once they unfold. Of course that would happen; how could it not?
Like the first, this is as good as anything I've ever read. I am very glad I bought it. Glad he doesn't have another ready though - I have to get some sleep!
Highly, highly recommended.
While he is on his way to Jupiter, his friends are left behind to pick up the pieces. Akira breaks the news to Carol and to Mary that he will not be coming back and that he was the boy who Dawn was looking for. The FBI investigates them and finds nothing but does take all of Ken’s rockets that were at the clubhouse. Which was no big deal because they didn’t get anything important.
I found Ken’s travel to Jupiter fascinating and very intriguing. Definitely made me wonder when we’ll finally send manned expeditions to Jupiter and its moons. I also thought that him choosing a school to share his journey with was fantastic.
The comet, Ken wanting to save the world from it and how people reacted are totally what I would think people today would act if something like that ever happened. The riots, the food shortages…everything was written how I expected people to act in an apocalyptic situation.
I did find Ken a bit self-absorbed in this book. But, he was dealing with his own issues and dealing with facing his own death. So I can totally understand why he acted that way.
The end of the book was great. So many things were wrapped up and so many storylines, carried over from the first book, were resolved in a satisfactory way. I am wondering if there will be a 3rd book. Just from the way this one ended, I can see a 3rd one being written.
I will warn everyone….this is not a YA book. The first one, yes….100%. This one, not so much. It is so much darker than the first one. I will also mention that I didn’t get the title until the end of the book. You want to know what I am talking about? Simple….read the book.

But he’s given an unexpected gift and his life is extended. How he spends this gift, however, makes him the most hated man in history. Will the world absolve Ken of his extreme sin? More importantly, will the green-eyed girl who broke his heart forgive him for what he was driven to do?
I recommend this book to young adults.
I don’t remember every saying this before but I enjoyed the sequel better than the first book! I also don’t say this often because Hollywood usually ruins it but I would love to see this turned into a movie. It starts off right where the last one ended. I cannot say a whole lot why I enjoyed this book so much without giving away too many spoilers but it was really great. It wrapped up many stories from the first one. Once again this one ended very abruptly and left me on the edge of my seat. If the author writes a third I would totally be reading it.
I received a free copy of this book from the author for my honest review.
I rate this book a 4 out of 5 stars.
