What a delicious, dark, and insane ride. Ashley Jade never ceases to find beauty in the twisted and titillating, to be unapologetically original and provocative, or to completely OWN me with her stories. Hate Me is nothing like I expected- darker, more complex, more twisting and shocking. But drama aside, Hate Me is an emotional tour de force- its a story that makes you question the very nature of love, and by extension, our orientation to it.
Ashley has such a keen ability to take a trope and put it on its head- her stories are never what they seem-and the result is a story that really defies any labels, stories that are refreshingly different and unexpected. Stories that hit you in the gut so sharply that you have to recover a bit before you can truly digest their brilliance. There’s daringness to her storytelling, a bravado that is quite consuming. In part, this is because Ashley is unafraid to do what so many avoid- she lets her characters be deeply flawed, unlikeable at times, villains in their own story. She sees the humanity in their brokenness, the bravery in their savageness, and she doesn’t just dabble in their issues, she IMMERSES us in them, by giving us narratives that put her characters through incredible adversity, with her own delicious brand of dramatic darkness. And Hate Me might be her boldest story yet.
Knox- oh Knox. I can’t describe him without spoiling, but he is a FORCE. He’s Ashley’s most flawed character yet- not truly redeemable, not likable but somehow lovable. He’s sinister and toxic and unsettling- but he’s also surprisingly vulnerable. Ashley chisels her way into his heart’s darkness and somehow uses it to paint the beauty of his soul- even if it is forever stained. Like so many characters before him, Ashley accepts Knox for who and what he is, she develops him with integrity- even the parts that are “wrong” and messed up, even his hate and anger, even his depraved choices. She doesn’t justify or excuse his actions, she lets him be what he is- a psychopath- and for that, somehow I love him even more.
Aspen rivals Sawyer for my favorite Ashley Jade heroine of all time- she’s quirky, loving, and gentle- but unlike Sawyer, she’s been tainted by the darkness around her- she’s the least straightforward heroine in Ashley’s books, because there is a duality to her. Twin existences that rival one another- contrasts that make her so interesting. She’s the good girl who touches darkness, a sweetheart that has developed her own grit, a lost soul who won’t stop fighting to be found. Her heart just longs to matter- to belong to someone.
These two have a violent, chaotic, and vitriolic connection- make no mistake, it is intense and unusual and unsettling, but also electric and captivating. And their dynamic is only part of this wild ride- the whole time you’re just trying to figure out just where this story is going, and where it does I was not anticipating. This is a stepbrother bully, a taboo, a romantic suspense- all of those things yet none of those things. Such is the genius of Ashley Jade- she makes you question everything. Even the nature of love itself-is perhaps hate really just an expression of love? Ah, well you’ll have to read to find out.
PS: this is a total standalone. None if the Black Mountain Academy books need to be read to read this, nor any of AJ’s other series.
Another PS: Fair warning- those concerned with safety or those with strict parameters when it comes to romance, this is not for you. This book doesn’t skirt around it- in fact, it embraces its “unsafe” depiction of love. I also have exactly ONE trigger (ie very little makes me unsettled), and this book hit on it, so readers who are on the fence, beware.

First, I have to say I love when this author lets loose and lets it all fly out the window when she writes because the results are stunning. Second, I have to leave a small forewarning that there is a slight amount of questionable material. This is a bully romance after all. "Who knew monsters could be so beautiful? Then again… that’s exactly what lures you in. Beauty is an aphrodisiac that attracts everyone." From day one, these two did not get along. Opposites in almost every way. When they just shared a school, things were bad but tolerable for Aspen. When her mom marries his dad and she has to live with him, things get so much worse. "I want to know what makes him tick and what makes him so evil. I wanted a battle… but he gave me a war." Woah. Our girl Aspen has some serious secrets going on here. While she appears pretty innocent on the surface, she is far from. But let's be honest, Knox isn't any better. When it comes to keeping secrets, he's the master of the two. It's not long before they all start tumbling out into the open though. And they are shocking. "We’re like two magnets… the electrical currents running through us simultaneously repel and attract one another." The chemistry and want between them is extreme. While they may hate each other they still want each other like the fires of he!! are plaguing them. And for the people they are, things they've been through, they very well may be. "Aspen’s in my system. Pumping through my veins like sweet poison and surrounding the empty spaces of my cold, black heart." There's a thin line between love and hate. Truth and acceptance. Understanding and knowing. The question is can these two move beyond their pasts and find something more than what they were previously shown. Find love, understanding and acceptance in each other. "Every action has a consequence." This is a part of The Black Mountain Academy series but can be read as a standalone.

The author did a decent job until the 2 main characters killed their parents. The mother was innocent of any wrong doing in comparison to the psychopath father who was a murderer. It made no sense to kill the mother other than making the stages deaths believable. I rooted for them until that happened. Author took an easy way out and seemed to have a great story that led to no where at the end. She rushed the end and threw together a happy ending.

OMG! I love, love, love, this book. Ashley is phenomenal at what she does and her books show it.
BMA(Black Mountain Academy) is a series of books by wonderful authors, and each book is a STANDALONE.
Hate Me, is not your typical love story book. Its about two kids from youth to teens that has hate for each other. But it’s more than just hate, it’s a whole lot more with these two Knox and Aspen.
Knox is the devil himself and he knows it. He just do what he wants and doesn’t expect a reaction but that not how the world works and that’s not how his family is.
Aspen is the girl that wants more out of life but always get thrown a curveball, lemons, baseball bats, the kitchen sink, etc. whatever you can think of it being thrown because that’s just Aspen’s life. But when she thinks she has a little control of her life, boom she doesn’t.
Hate Me is a read for this year and it’s highly anticipated. The secrets in this story is so delicious that you won’t put it down until the end just to get to know the secrets.
“And every action has a consequence.”
That statement right there means a lot in this story and it’s very understanding why but boy that word “consequences” is taken to a different level.

Started off strong... But ended with disappointment
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 29, 2021Verified Purchase
I normally love the books by this author, however this one was just lacking. I preordered this and waited with anticipation for... Nothing. Started out strong with the dark bully themes and forbidden love etc. It then escalated to quit frankly nothing that would ever happen outside of a film and just for the ending to be nonsense?! So they've committed this massive crime just for him to say adios and 4 years later waltzes back and no conversation nothing, just I love you the end. It could have been so good but the author tried to put in every plot twist known to man instead of giving it a proper ending, or doing really in depth characters. Really disappointed by this book

Aspen and Knox
This is a standalone in the interconnected standalones of the Black Mountain Academy series. Some characters from other books in this multi author series make cameos in these standalones.
Aspen and Knox previously meet when they were younger. Knox didn't like the way this young girl would look at him as if she could see right through him. So he pushed her, making her mouth bleed and cutting her hair. He only ment to take her ribbon from her hair.
Aspen's wondered throught the years as she's gotten older why one month her parents can pay the bills to the next that they're eating peanut butter sandwiches. Until her dad moves her to Black Mountain Academy, saying that she can do much better with her excellent grades there.
Until she comes face-to-face with Knox.
She trys to avoid him, but he's out to torment her and humiliate her. And do that he does.
When Aspens father is found dead, it's revealed that he was conning people.
She loved her father, her mother likes the lavish lifestyle. So when her mother gets together and marries Knox's father, it's her way of saying that they're being looked after. Aspen doesn't like her Mother's choices. But hers are just as questionable.
She's got herself a job and other secrets she's hiding from her mother and everyone else. Until Knox finds out her secrets and starts blackmailing her. She's fiesty. His father doesn't like that Aspen has a mouth on her and tells Knox to reign her in. Knox, in his own way is protecting her.
Loved this bully, blackmail, twist and turns.

It’s not surprising…Ashley Jade has done it again. She’s written an exceptional story with equally exceptional characters.
Aspen, despite her hardships, is fierce. Her ability to face things head-on and overcome any conflict that comes her way is the main reason why I love her so much. She rises above any obstacle and holds her own under challenging circumstances.
If you love a strong female who fights for what she wants, I’m convinced you’ll fall for her as well.
Knox is guarded, calculated, malicious at times, but if you dig beneath the surface, you’ll get a glimpse of something deeper, something you can’t quite explain or understand until you get to the very end of the story, and then it all makes sense.
There’s a fine line between love and hate…I hated to love him, but loved to hate him. He’s a complex character who had me wondering if something was wrong with me for falling so hard for him.
That’s the brilliance behind this book. The author makes you think. Makes you feel. Keeps you on the edge of your seat, digging for clues, until the very last page.
If you love stepbrother/bully romance, you’re certain to enjoy this.
**Please note: this book is a standalone.**

This book was.... there really are no words to adequAtely describe what I read. But I’ll try. It’s a book of darkness and tortured pasts And pained present and hopeful futures. It’s a book that is taboo and forbidden, but is done in a way that is entertaining and captivating.
Ms Jade does it again and like all the other times I’m floored by her ability to stitch together the english language to create such a masterpiece. The way the emotions are given to you page after page. It grabs a hold of you and doesn’t let go until right at the end.
Knox and Aspen. My goodness. These two are fire together. I love their chemistry. The way they feed off each other. How they both give each other exactly what they need and more.
Love them so hard!!!
