Product Description

Pierre Lacocque has led Mississippi Heat since its inception in 1991. The harmonica player has always surrounded himself with the cream of the crop of Chicago blues players. Lurrie Bell, who appeared on Heat's 2005 One Eye Open (DVD 1783, CD DE 783), is back again for two songs as is lead vocalist Inetta Visor. Guitarist Carl Weathersby plays throughout and sings on "Hell and Back". The Chicago Horns and latin percussionist Ruben Alvarez also add some very nice touches to this varied disc. Contains twelve songs many of which are new original compositions.

Review

Even when winter's howling down the 'L' tracks, Chicago always has Mississippi Heat to keep it warm. The hometown band with the faraway name has been a traditionally-minded blues furnace ever since Israeli-born Pierre Lacocque established the musical co-op in 1991. Lacocque serves as altruistic ringmaster from behind a buzzing harmonica, as a revolving-door policy swirls the city's finest around him. Today sees esteemed guest Lurrie Bell and Carl Weathersby joining a core squad that includes new enlistee Giles Corey on guitar, 'Hambone' Cameron on all-things-keys (piano, Wurlitzer, organ, clavinet), and drummer Kenny Smith, son of stockman extraordinaire Willie 'Big Eyes' Smith. The Chicago Horns add extra oomph. United with an all-for-one mentality, the ensemble provides shuffling thrust and slow flow behind the purr 'n' roar of South Side diva Inetta Visor. -- BluesRag

Led by the weeping wail of bandleader Pierre Lacocque's dexterous harp playing and the powerful soul-blues vocals of Inetta Visor, Mississippi Heat have been one of the most successful Chicago Blues bands to come out of the Windy City for years. Recorded in Delmark's Riverside Studios, the band's eighth album, and second for the world-renowned local label, Hattiesburg Blues, is a triumphant fusion of urban blues, southern soul and latin and African rhythms. -- Pop Matters

Start with the record label, Delmark. Founded by Bob Koester 55 years ago, Delmark does not publish light weights. This is Mississippi Heat's second release on Delmark (8th album overall); that alone should guarantee no duds. Next, check the length of the CD; at 63 minutes, a buyer is definitely getting his money's worth. Finally, consider the musicians involved; it is practically an all-star line up. To name a few, the man who founded the band in 1991, Pierre Lacocque, is a fantastic harp player, songwriter, bandleader, composer and arranger. He wrote or co-wrote all but two numbers. Lead vocalist Inetta Visor is a Chicago native with a powerful and expressive voice. Guests on guitar Lurrie Bell and Carl Weathersby have established their playing prominence long ago. The Chicago Horns, led by Kenny Anderson with Willie Henderson, Hank Ford, and Bill McFarland, and Latin percussionist Ruben Alvarez add significantly to this disc.

The band has always had an ensemble sound: all musicians are featured. The music is traditional because it is steeped in Chicago's golden sounds of the 1950s. On the other hand, Pierre's blues is unique because he dislikes treading on old beaten paths. He always writes new material, and this album is a combination of Chicago Blues and Latin rhythms.

From the first, bouncing real-deal blues notes of track one, Tiger Man, you'll know you have made the right purchase. So, plop down those hard earned bucks with confidence; this album is a winner! And, remember, the high cost of living hasn't affected its popularity. -- Illinois Blues
