Olivia, while Tucker is away -I'll spare you the synopsis of the characters- has heard a noise. She investigates and finds a man in a sheet trying to scare her out of her home. While trying to make his escape, the sheeted man has, what I'm guessing is a heart attack, falls out a window, and Olivia calls the paramedics. While waiting for the ambulance, the man confesses important things to Olivia. The medics arrive, take said sheeted man away, and that's the last we read of him or his confessions.
Olivia, again while Tucker is away, tries to escape her uncle. She hides in a closet and falls through a secret passage way. When Tucker finds her, her mention of this is put off too long. It is also an obvious explanation for how her uncle has managed to sneak around their home unnoticed, but is never mentioned.
There are more, but you get my point. There are also some editing issues that need to be cleaned up.
Personally, I like the 50/50/50 rule when is comes to romantic suspense. 50% romance and 50% suspense, where the love scenes start at 50% of the book...not 70%. By 70%, this reader is all but sick of the inner turmoil, back and forth, "yes, I want you, but...".
On a positive note, this lady knows how to write a bad guy and a love scene. Best parts in all her books, IMO. I hope you all don't mistake my constructive criticism for not enjoying her writing. The truth is, if I didn't, I wouldn't have read all of her books. I think she's going to be a fab author...she just has a few kinks that need to be ironed out.
When Olivia enters the house, she finds the only friend she had while growing up, Tucker Hawkins, living there. Tucker has a deed to the house and is staying put until they can determine who rightfully owns the house and why Olivia pushed him away so long ago.
Haunted Memories is an engaging and twisted tale of passion, murder, and secrets. This story is packed with twists and turns that will have you both anticipating and dreading what is around the next corner. I admired the courage that Olivia had in returning to the house where she was so miserable and in facing the things she was so frightened of. Melanie Atkins has created an intriguing story with appealing characters that is sure to grab your full attention.
