Now she’s saddled with the jockey’s ghost, who insists she find his killer. Angie Hickman has been in love with words for as long as she can remember. Angie received a BA in secondary English education from Indiana University while also pursuing theater, performing in shows from Shakespeare to Pinter. She expanded her passion for words through her work in libraries and bookstores, as a high school English teacher, and now, as an audiobook narrator. When she's not sitting in a tiny padded room and letting the voices in her head come out to play, Angie enjoys playing in the dirt growing veggies and getting lost in her fabric collection while sewing. --This text refers to the audioCD edition.

This book was far too disjointed and tried to fit too much in which meant that nothing really got the attention it deserved. There was the "love triangle" between Dylan, Ken and Cookie. It seemed pretty weird and forced. The murder of Maureen didn't make much sense and was solved off-scene so the only reason I can think of for it to be included was to provide another witty ghost to add to the already annoying, inane banter. The murder of the jockey didn't have anything really to do with the Derby or horses so why pick him and not someone else? In other words, he was interchangeable with just about anyone.
So many things were confusing and/or irritating. I used to enjoy the ghost's dialog between each other and Cookie but this time it was way too much; half the time I couldn't tell who was talking and what they were talking about. Pages of useless dialog - not funny, witty or necessary. At various points the ghosts tell Cookie to do something (generally dangerous) and then turn around and say don't do it. Confusing.
And there were lots of "loose ends" that never got explained. Why was Hannah - Cookie's first bed-and-breakfast hostess - included and in some detail? She was nasty, obnoxious and rude. Apparently even though it was Derby Week - and every single available room in Louisville would certainly be taken - Cookie was her only guest until Ken showed up. Why? And she has an attic of vintage clothes including a dress she just had to see Cookie try on despite the fact she doesn't like Cookie? What was that (long) scene all about? What happened to the vet who mysteriously disappeared? Maybe it was explained in passing but by the end of the book I was skimming. How was the poison administered? It generally isn't drinkable and Ramon never answered whether he drank something odd. Cookie was supposed to be there to help her friend select vintage clothing for Derby Week but she didn't really do that after the first couple events. Why couldn't it have been done ahead of time? There were lots of these little conundrums throughout the book and they, along with the constant chatter, drove me nuts.
I was looking forward to reading about Cookie at the Derby but it was a dud. Heck, Pressey couldn't even be bothered by naming the winning horse! After the race Cookie and the ghosts jumped around screaming "the horse won!" I'm sure a horse DID win. Let's not get specific or anything. And the murderer was not only obvious but a cliche as well. Actually when you consider both Maureen and Ramon's murders, they were the same cliche. Very lazy writing.
The best scene in the entire book was when Secretariat came for Ramon. And while I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was not enough to carry the book.
The mystery was good. And, the search for the killer was well executed, but it felt anti-climatic when the ghost Maureen leaves without any active search by Cookie Chanel.
I can't say too much without giving the story away, and I don't want to do that.
I will have to await the Author's timing to read her next novel. I hope it will be soon.
