    The WinTV-HVR-950 is a simple-to-use device that brings over-the-air high definition ATSC digital TV as well as analog cable TV directly to your PC desktop or laptop. With the additional included antenna, it can also receive analog TV broadcasts, and can also accept video feeds directly from a camera or satellite box.

    More versatile than a DVR, the WinTV-HVR-950 is a pocket-sized device that simply plugs into your computer's USB port. It features a built-in digital ATSC over-the-air TV receiver. If you live in one of the more than 200 cities in the United States that receives ATSC digital TV, you'll have immediate access to as many as 1500 digital TV stations. ATSC digital TV is the over-the-air HDTV standard for North America. ATSC broadcasts range in resolution from standard definition up to the high definition 1080i format. (To check the ATSC digital transmissions in your area, input your zip code at titantv.com.)

    A portable digital TV antenna, which can be used to receive digital TV up to 10 miles from an ATSC transmitter, is also included . (To check the ATSC digital transmissions in your area, input your zip code at titantv.com) If you live in an area where you can't currently receive ATSC digital TV, the WinTV-HVR-950 can still be used to watch and record analog TV from cable TV or a TV antenna. (The WinTV-HVR-950 cannot receive digital cable TV or digital satellite TV.)

    Once the WinTV-HVR-950 is connected, you can begin to record your favorite shows in high-quality MPEG-2 directly to your hard disk. Television recordings will typically consume 5 GB of disk space per hour for ATSC high definition, while analog recordings will typically consume 1.5 GB of disk space per hour.

    The Hauppauge 1145 WinTV-HVR-950 includes WinTV v6 TV application for PCs and Elgato's EyeTV Lite TV application for Macs. With both software, you can set up your computer to automatically record your favorite TV programs daily, weekly, or just once. Compatibility with Microsoft's Windows Media Center means that you can watch TV and your recordings with Windows Media Center.

    The WinTV application offers an elegant interface to watch TV in a window or full screen.
    View larger. More about PVR Technology
    PVR stands for PC Video Recorder. The WinTV-HVR-950 is a PVR that allows you to play television through your computer and record the broadcasts digitally. PVR doesn't use standard videocassettes; instead, it uses your computer's hard disk to store the broadcasts.

    Once you record a television show to your PC's hard drive, you can burn a CD or DVD that will allow you to play the show back on another computer or on your television. With video editing software (not included with the WinTV-HVR-950), you can even edit the shows. This is a great feature if you want to save clips from movies or sitcoms, or keep your favorite player's grand slam or TD kick-off return for posterity.

    And just like a typical VCR, the WinTV-HVR-950 offers you several recording options, depending on your play back needs. If you want the highest quality recording for playback through your HDTV, all you need is enough hard drive space to support high-quality recording. By using the lowest recording option, you can use your WinTV-HVR-950, along with an inexpensive video camera, as a low-cost on-site video surveillance system. In fact, the possibilities of how you can take advantage of the WinTV-HVR-950 are endless.

    What's in the Box
    WinTV-HVR-950 USB 2.0 TV stick with cable TV or ATSC antenna connection; USB extension cable; portable antenna; software on CD-ROM; and quick installation guide.

I originally purchased this product for use with my MacBook Pro when I travel. Overall, I have found that this product works reasonably well. Setup was relatively quick and simple. The only catch is that you have to repeat setup every time you change locations. There is no method in EyeTV to quickly rescan the channels. The supplied antenna works shockingly well for an omnidirectional antenna. Video quality in EyeTV is acceptable, but I often find there are sound issues. There seems to be a lot of clipping in the audio. I have seen some rumors that this may be mitigated (but definitely not fixed) in a later release, but I can simply not bring myself to pay for an upgrade to the full version of EyeTV. I was also disappointed to learn that there is no clear-QAM support with this version of the product. If you are looking for an inexpensive tuner to give you basic functionality, this product may suit your needs.

I had been using the Miglia TV Micro since 2006 on my imac and it finally died on me recently, unless I did the 'stick it under the blow drier for 5mins' trick, to get it back to live for a few days and then repeat. That got very annoying and I was looking for a replacement and found that the newest versions of TV Micro cost a lot of money, then I stumbled upon this wondrous little gadget. The Hauppauge 1145 MyTV HD TV for the Mac was perfect and priced better plus it supported HD content not just cable and it supports antenna if you're minus both.

It loads up fairly quick and if you have one of the Apple remotes you will quickly learn you can control the channels and go through your recordings with it with great ease. One word of caution, this Hauppauge 1145 only comes with Eye TV light so if you, like me, had Eye TV 2 with your Miglia TV Micro you will find it lacking some features and you'll have to upgrade to Eye TV 3 if you want those features back, like saving your recorded programs etc. One other thing is the Miglia's remote does not support the Hauppauge 1145 MyTV HD so you are unfortunately out of luck on that working for you. However considering it's a completely different company I can't hold that against this fine product, that was just an FYI for people who are upgrading there old USB cable/HD/Sat USB sticks.

I have only one hope now after using this new product, that is that this one out-lasts the Miglia version which is plagued with the issue of not recognizing your computers USB 2.0 connection and thus ceasing to operate and delegating the user to do what I mentioned in my opening paragraph. So so far so good, I recommend it for sure and can't find any faults with it.

I originally wrote this review while I was having issues with the product, read below for more information. The problem has since been fixed, whether on Apple's side or Elgato, I don't really care. But it now works just fine. I have used this connected to an antenna while visiting family and the only problem I had with signal was my distance from the source.

I wish it was more programmable out of the box. I think the software for the Mac is very good, but it is crippled just enough to annoy. This software is meant to show what is possible and hint at what the full package can do, not necessarily to do.

I got this for Christmas for use with my MacBook [2GHz Core 2 Duo w/ 2GB RAM]. I do have Leopard (factory) installed. I am using the included EyeTV Lite software. I do have a fair knowledge of computers and trouble shooting, so the problem is more then just an improperly installed device/software.

The device comes with a small antenna to pick up digital broadcasts, which is able to catch the local stations nicely. When I use it in this manner (watching broadcast digital TV) there are no problems, beautiful picture that stays good for the duration of use. But the device also connects to your analog cable (coaxial) and composite (through a USB device included), and allows you to watch TV.

Problem fixed, but never did receive any communication from Haupage or Elgato

This is where I have a problem. I have been in touch with both Hauppage and Elgato (EyeTV) in an attempt to remedy the problem, later on their responses.

The problem is if I am not using a mouse, or let my mouse idle for 5-10 seconds I get lines on the display. I had hoped that this was just a minor issue and that when I recorded the lines would not appear. I was wrong. The lines are reasonably thin, but are many, and appear to be the TV image shifted 30-50% to the side. If I wiggle the mouse, the lines disappear, but if I have no mouse connected the lines do not disappear at all. I have updated the Elgato software to it's current version (1.1) but without any effect.

--------++++++++
++++--------++++

Since the problem only shows when I let my mouse idle, it seems likely to be a software issue. I sent messages to both Hauppage and Elgato as previously stated, received from both an automated response to show that they had gotten the message. Neither company associated with this product was overly helpful. Hauppage responded in a few days saying they had not heard of this before, but that it sounded like a software issue and directed me to Elgato. From what I can tell, I agree; though could simply be blaming the other guy. I sent Elgato my plea for help over a week ago, and have yet to receive anything other then the automated reply. Poor service indeed.

What a nifty little device. When TV went digital my portable TV went out the window. This, and my laptop make a terrific replacement.

I love the picture, I love the sound and I love the recording feature. Like all Digital TVs it does lose sync if the antenna is moved, but that is a minor inconvenience, as I usually sit in one place to watch.

Easy to install, easy to use, and sensitive enough to work in some pretty remote areas.

Only one problem: It does tend to run hot. Not so hot that you wold get a burn touching it, but hot enough to worry that components inside might reach their threshold. I tried putting a large metal washer on the COAX connector, and it helped to sink the heat, but this part of the design might be looked at by the manufacturer. I also tried wrapping it in a damp washcloth - and that really helped, but looked stupid.
