This devices work perfectly with Windows Media Center. But if you're going to record something through the composite (RCA) inputs, you need to download/install WinTV. The one that comes in the CD is version 6. I didn't install it. I downloaded version 7 instead.
I did have some problems since I installed the drivers and used it with Media Center first, then I downloaded WinTV and just installed the application without reinstalling the driver. This caused WinTV to keep crashing. I uninstalled it, re-installed the drivers (from the downloaded file) and then installed WinTV and no problems.
There is lag when recording through the composite inputs but you just need a few splitters and problem solved, the recorded video was smooth although when there is no sound you can still hear a little static, kinda like an old tube TV but it's not very noticeable. Still I think this is is an awesome product and highly recommend it.

It is incredibly simple to install and get working, and has the plus of being able to move from machine to any type of machine via its USB cable, something I have never done but it could certainly come in handy- pop it onto the laptop for that long trip, perhaps. If the software license permits, of course. I don't think they'd care.
The software itself seems rather quaint, or even homemade, once I explored around a bit, I will have to admit it appeared somewhat crude, but does what is needed. Documentation is nearly useless. I could detail the entire operation, but there are so many settings many people may not be interested in, it might not be worth it here. And I still have the original version, not the upgraded. Hauppauge does not exactly worry users to death with an endless stream of revisions and upgrades, it gets the job done, what more do you want?
Of course, so much has changed in the world of online video even in the brief time I have owned the HVR to some it might seem irrelevant. Almost anything one could want to watch- and much- maybe too much more is always available online.
But actually my initial reason for purchasing this device was not to watch TV- it was for the express purpose of transcribing hundreds of hours of video I have shot, edited, produced or just collected. At a time when a 130GB HD was considered an extravagance, the idea of storing a lot of tapes to disk seemed somewhat limited. I can jump ahead and say that with 1TB drives selling for under $80 and headed downward, it was worth the wait. I have had some issues with the aspect ratio, when I burn a rip to a disk it defaults to a widescreen format that distorts, I can correct it upon playback but I would prefer to not have to.
When I used it with TV, at first I had some problems finding the output signal on my two-room Dish signal. Eventually it locked in to an unusually named channel on QAM I think (which was not the same as the first time I installed it) but it worked. After pricing TiVo and other DVR's, this is a perfect way to timeshift- since neither recorder can time shift, I saw no reason to use it this way- I recorded the satellite signal onto a portable external hard drive, then use the USB input on my BluRay machine for playback. A tiny bit more work, but I don't do this all that often, and when I do, I tend to save a few for bingewatching. I am sure I could get it to stream over my network, but I am just too lazy.
After almost a year of decently heavy use it failed outright. It was still under warranty, so I called Hauppauge (which I learned is pronounced "Hop-Hog") and talked to tech support which did indeed, as another reviewer put it, "probably consists of a an old kitchen table stacked with returned and broken used parts surrounded with dusty old tech manuals." I could see a guy in a sleeveless tee thumbing through an old magazine while talking disinterestedly to me on the phone. With no intent to help me possibly solve the problem, he just took my info and promised to cross-ship me one. Which he did, and I have not had a problem since.
I leave it powered up whenever the computer is on, perhaps that has something to do with it. At rest it only draws .04 watts, so I don't feel too bad in doing so. The box is mounted to a plate on the wall with the composite inputs facing up, which makes changing from the many sources I use a snap. Perhaps this helps the device stay cool and running all this time, a dissimilar mounting near heat could conceivably validate the many QA complaints, again, I guess I just got lucky.
Not mentioned anywhere I have yet read is another bit of included software, the Ulead Video Maker. This appears to be a very stripped down version of an older Corel product, and after having tried no less than six video suites, this is the one I always go back to. It is simple, easy to learn, and always produces a decent image. But again, at that weird aspect ratio, which appears fine on the computer, but apparently not native to a TV.
One other feature I do not understand- when making a recording it creates sort of a pre-roll file before getting on to the main body, which seems to delay the proper start and causes a five second blackout on startup.
The timer and scheduler work quite well, but you have to be sure to start and end early just to be sure to catch the slight delay on startup. You can edit any fluff with Ulead, quite convenient.
The FM feature worked quite well, despite a death of signals where I live. It also has gone missing since my reinstall, but I so rarely use it I see no need to threaten my install by changing anything.
I found the remote control to work quite well, but I hate having so much stuff in my startup group so I now have to start it manually,
An hour of video at any quality setting will cost you about 4.5 GB. Despite being pleased so far, if it should fail again, I would definitely explore other brands.
