The Hauppauge MediaMVP-HD makes it easy to enjoy your favorite digital videos, music, and photos, at up to 1080p resolution, on your HDTV. The MediaMVP-HD plays digital content from a Windows PC or a USB drive. When connected to a PC, the MediaMVP-HD uses your existing local area network (wired) connection to play videos, music, and display digital pictures on your HDTV. In both cases, you can enjoy digital video recordings, photo slideshows, plus your MP3 music collection--all through the high-definition picture and superior sound of your home television. And for the ultimate, customized home media system network, you can connect up to 12 MediaMVP-HDs, each to a separate TV set, giving you practically unlimited play and record options.

From Hauppauge, the leader in bringing TV to your PC, the MediaMVP-HD Digital Media Player lets you take advantage of the high-quality image of your HDTV and enjoy your favorite digital videos in high definition. Your digital videos, music or pictures can be stored on a USB thumb drive or an external USB hard drive, or you can use your home network to link your PC to your HDTV.
Even better, you can record videos on your PC using Hauppauge's WinTV or HD-PVR recorders (sold separately), and play them on your TV through the MediaMVP-HD. In addition to supporting most video high-definition file formats, such as MPEG2 and H.264, the MediaMVP-HD supports all recordings made from any of Hauppauge's North American or European TV Tuners.
Listen to Digital Music on Your Home Speakers
With the MediaMVP-HD, you can connect to your home audio system through optical digital audio, and play MP3 song playlists--all through your high-quality home speakers. In addition, your digital photo (JPEG) slideshows will make a big impression using the high-definition picture and audio from your home system.
Easy On-Screen Navigation Using the Remote
With the included Hauppauge remote control, it's easy to navigate your digital media from your TV, including your selection of digital videos, or individual music titles. Volume adjustment is done with the Hauppauge remote control, so you only need one device for accessing and playing your digital media on your TV set. And our exclusive FastSkip allows you to quickly move through your videos. If you have multiple MediaMVP-HDs, you can stop the playback of a video on one MediaMVP-HD, and start up where you left off on another. This is great for watching videos in different rooms.
Connect Multiple MediaMVP-HDs on a Single Network
Customize your home theater system so you can listen to PC music on one TV while watching a digital movie on another. The MediaMVP-HD works with Ethernet (wired) networks, easily connecting through a network router or switch (sold separately). You can connect up to 12 wired MediaMVP-HDs on a single network, creating a home system with endless play options.
To use the MediaMVP-HD as a connected device, simply install the MediaMVP-HD server application software on your PC and connect the device to your PC through a 10/100 RJ-45 Ethernet port on routers, hubs, or switches. The MediaMVP-HD has built in connections for audio/video to the HDTV set through the HDMI, Component, S-Video or composite A/V connectors and digital audio (SPDIF), providing high-quality entertainment in the comfort of your home.

When I attempted playback of various media, I wasn't able to get sound over HDMI. I then tried component video (YPbPr) successfully. I went back to HDMI, lowered the bit rate for the sound, and had it up and running fine (including 720p .MKV playback).
From time-to-time the screen goes blank when you've been wandering around in the menus for too long and as of now, I have not been able to make use of the USB port (always reads folder empty no matter what's connected). I have a trouble ticket in with Hauppauge, will update with results.
Played every video format I threw at it
1080p HDMI Output
Decent WAF (Wife Approval Factor)
Instinctive remote control (could be better)
Intuitive on-screen menus
Easy network setup
Automatic video setup built into the software
Unit itself could look better
OSD needs polishing: speed, smoothness, fonts are big & blocky (can't really complain for the price)
Has to reboot after some setting changes
Screen goes blank every now and again while in the menu system
No automatic audio setup
Setup could have gone more smoothly. For the problem I had with sound over HDMI, there was nothing in the manual, on the website, or in any of the forums that gave me any insight on this problem. I literally stumbled onto the fix. The problem was likely due to the limitations of my HDTV, but the average consumer might not catch that. Although it's not important to my intended application, I'm still waiting on an answer for my USB port issue. All-in-all, for what I purchased it for, (multi-format Upnp/DLNA player w/ HDMI output) it's not horrible when you take into consideration that other comparable consumer products cost anywhere from $30 to $125 more and a custom-built PC with an HDMI output could cost upwards of $400 to $500 at a minimum.
I've not heard anything beyond the initial response (addressing my already resolved audio over HDMI issue) from Hauppauge support. I've also discovered that the MediaMVP-HD cannot play OGM video. The format is summarily ignored by the media browser (as in doesn't even show up as unknown). Although it's not advertised as one of the supported formats, I'm still disappointed. As for .MKV playback, if you have an MKV video with multiple audio tracks, there's no way to switch betewwn the two tracks. I also contacted Hauppauge about this and have gotten no answer. Prehaps I'll have better luck after the holidays.
Still no response from Hauppauge, I've moved on to using a PC with XBMC Live installed. The MediaMVP will still serve as a spare in my workshop, but isn't quite smooth and polished enough (software-wise) for my living room system. Eye candy is important.
I bought a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR 2250 tuner card for my home office PC, but did not want to locate the PC in the TV room for aesthetic reasons. I thought the Hauppauge MediaMVP-HD would provide the solution. The Hauppauge tuner card does a fine job of decoding the 12 Clear QAM channels on my bare-bones basic FiOS subscription. (We're not big TV watchers.) It can work with Windows Media Center (WMC) or with the included Hauppauge proprietary WinTV v.7 to watch HD TV live on my PC or record it. I can burn DVDs with several third-party burners. I had it working with WMC in August.
I received the Media MVP-HD in early September and got it connected to my HD TV via wired 100 Mb Ethernet, HDMI, etc. The first disappointment was that it can't play the .WM video files recorded by Windows Media Center, only those recorded by the proprietary WinTV v.7 software. Tech support acknowledged the problem and said there was no workaround. I switched to WinTV. That isn't quite as elegant as WMC, and it comes with a clunky third party TV Guide. However, it did work, once I got used to it, to watch TV on my PC or schedule future recordings. The MediaMVP-HD could play the .TS video files recorded by WinTV, but there was no sound! Poking around Hauppauge's support web site revealed that some MediaMVPs were shipped without an audio codec token. Although the web site says tech support can flash the AC3 token, it turned out not to be true, and the box had to be exchanged via RMA.
That done, the MediaMVP was able to play the .TS files, but more than half the time, the fast forward buttons on the remote ( >> ) and the advertised FastSkip function didn't work; also, the time counter would be blank or have bogus values. That made it impossible to skip over commercials, etc., and seriously compromised the value of the box. I had many exchanges with tech support over a two month period. For some reason, Hauppauge is unable to duplicate the problem, although several other reviewers here also mention it. Finally, tech support suggested having the .TS files automatically converted to .MPG. (It's a checkbox in Advanced setup on WinTV v.7.) That seems to have done it, so about three months later, I am a satisfied customer. Tech support was fairly responsive, though some reps are way better than others.
