Next I connected cables to my JVC GR-SXM330 camcorder, it uses a YELLOW and WHITE RCA cables only, no red, and it also has S-Video connector. My first rip of old home movies was a 19 year old tape my dad filmed of my niece coming home from the hospital after her birth. The scene starts in the driveway but the grass is yellow on the computer and green on the view finder. Also everything was blurry and way to bright in the settings or something, nothing looked right. I recorded the entire hour of the video thinking "garbage in, garbage out" from a bad tape. But then I put a different movie in and it was a little newer but the picture was awful again. I played the saved movies with VLC movie player and they were horrible! I I used the S-video cable (better picture, right?) and the white cable. I tried a few settings but I think I overloaded the USB connection because it made the screen blank so I put it back. Then just to test a theory, I unplugged the S-Video and used the YELLOW cable and the picture came out perfect!
Before you purchase this, MAKE SURE your Windows 10 computer has a spare USB 2.0 free or I do not think this will work. Also, when you start your recording make sure the picture looks right. You can always stop it after a few minutes and then go to your folder and play the version it saved and double check quality. If your quality is off, try a different cable. Don't forget to name your video on the initial interface or you'll get a random file name. That's no big deal but you'll have to watch the video to see what it is and rename it in the folder.
I had a heck of a time downloading and installing drivers on both computers before I chanced upon the correct order of things, the web site is useless for directions so I Googled it and found a few tips and tricks from other users.
I was "this" close to returning this thing but at the very last second, my computer found a new USB device and installed the drivers for it and it just worked.
Good luck!
However, I installed Windows 10 on my computer and went to re-download and install the WinTV software -- I'm in the process of digitizing all the home videos -- and was surprised to see that Hauppage's download page for the 610 USB-Live 2 had a new version out that's compatible with Windows 10. I went through the install (which was painless but did require the original CD to be in the disc drive) and loaded up the new app. The design is much more modern and clean, but that's only the cherry on top of the fantastic improvements they've made to the streaming/recording of my composite video. WinTV 7 was a burden but version 8 just works, and I'm able to use it without frustration.
So now this device, paired with its updated software, have earned 5 stars, since I'm able to happily digitize priceless family memories, just as I had hoped when I originally purchased this product. Here is the WinTV 8 feature/download page: http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_wintv8.html
I used the Composite video out from the DVR which is obviously an analog (Non HD) signal. The device takes that analog signal and and created a video which plays in 1080 Letterbox on my HD TV. Since it uses an analog signal to create the recording, the new video does not contain all the 1080 data and therefore does not have a the HD detail. I think it kind of stretches the analog signal. Either way, the result was pretty good. I did not experience any lag or glitching. If I had to quantify the recorded quality compared to the original I would give it a "B+"
After that, I was able to capture old VHS tapes using PowerDirector 15 (device shows up under the "Capture from Webcam" icon on the Capture tab). The Live-2 provides good quality video captures.
A quick note: Even brand new, commercially produced VHS tapes are very low resolution. VHS video quality degrades a little every time you play the tape. After 20 to 30 years, the VHS tape quality (not the USB-2 Live device ) determine if you end up with a good video capture. This device should be more than adequate for most people...

I had an Aver-media device that was about the same price but it quit working soon after I bought it and it never produced a good digital image. The Hauppauge unit is good value for the money. some of the more expensive units do not perform as well! Stay away from the cheapest units as they either do a poor job or they fail to be recognised by the OS
After days of trying to figure what was the high pitch whine when opening the capture software, I stumbled upon the answer. Don't plug this into a USB 3 port. USB 2 only!
Also, if you don't use some type of time base corrector, you'll get mediocre results. Running the vcr direct to capture device - my captures are jumpy, have static, and weird colors.
I found a Panasonic dvd recorder - DMR-ES15 on ebay for 50.00
I run the vcr into the dvdr and then into the capture device. You don't have to record with the ES15 ,just a passthrough to take advaantage of its TBC capabilities. The captured video is as perfect as the day I recorded it. No video defects at all.
