PreS-Gr 2-A game of hide-and-seek is the basis of this story, but with a humorous twist. An enormous elephant and a boy with scribbly brown curls are the players. Before they begin, the elephant discloses, "I must warn you though. I'm VERY good." Readers will easily spot Elephant on each spread as he attempts to disguise himself behind the drapes, under a comforter on a bed, and under a lampshade. Children will revel in being able to spot the elephant while the boy searches fruitlessly. Attentive readers will notice the boy's dog sniffing the elephant out in every spread. The mixed-media illustrations work masterfully to tell the story alongside the brief text, which consists exclusively of dialogue. The dynamic backgrounds are splashed with watercolor, and the figures are given soft edges, lending a dreamy quality to the story. The impressive use of light and shadow and incorporation of reds, oranges, and purples add a richness to the pages that will transfix children. In the final pages, a new character and a funny twist will entertain kids. VERDICT This amusingly absurd story paired with the warm and wonderful illustrations will have kids coming back again and again.-Kimberly Tolson, Medfield Public Library, MAα(c) Copyright 2011. This book has the making of a classic and children will delight in trying to find the baby elephant as he plays a game of hide and seek. You have to look hard for him because .... "He is very good." He hides under blankets, on top of the bed (not under as one traditionally would do), disguises himself as a lamp with a lampshade over his head, stuffs himself inside the garden shed and even becomes invisible behind a tree (or is he?), just to name a few. He tricks the boy every time with his disappearing act until voilà, he magically appears right out of thin air again.
"There you are!" exclaims the little boy with a big grin on his face.
Equally amusing to track are the boy's expressive pet dog and the sluggish slow tortoise (or is he?), that are depicted brilliantly in the story.
Why the book was chosen by the publisher Gecko Press:
"This book tickles the funny bone of children and adults equally. Part of the humour comes through the juxtaposition of the subdued, beautiful illustrations and the absurdity of an elephant trying to hide inside a standard lamp." - Julia Marshall, Publisher
I love when a book comes along that when you pick it up to share you know that it is a winner. The illustrations, the font, the colour pallet, the whole vibe of the book oozes success. I highly recommend it with a 5 hug ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) endorsement. Enjoy!
It could be a hit, though. It's pretty silly, with the elephant hiding in a game of hide-and-seek and doing just...just terrible. Not that he's found, but that he really ought to be found. It won't even be a seek-and-find for your kid, because the elephant is just out there, which is the humor of the story. I think it'll really depend on your delivery of the book. Make sure to interact with your kid, maybe encourage them to yell where the elephant is. It may not be hard to find, but kids do so love yelling at their books. ;p
