Rain Ryland has never belonged anywhere. He’s used to people judging him for his rough background, his intimidating size, and now, his orphan status. He’s always been on the outside, looking in, and he’s fine with that. Until he moves to New Wurzburg and meets Friederike Burkhart.
Freddie isn’t like normal teen girls, though. And someone wants her dead for it. Freddie warns he’d better stay far away if he wants to stay alive, but Rain’s never been good at running from trouble. For the first time, Rain has something worth fighting for, worth living for. Worth dying for.
The Haven series is best enjoyed in order.

About the author

Mary Lindsey is a multi award-winning, RITA® nominated author of romance for adults and teens. Her books Shattered Souls and Fragile Spirits have been selected for the 2017 Spirit of Texas Reading Program.
Mary lives on an island in the middle of a river. Seriously, she does. When not writing, she wrangles her rowdy pack of three teens, two Cairn Terriers, and one husband. Inexplicably, her favorite animal is the giant anteater and at one point, she had over 200 "pet" Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. The roaches are a long story involving three science-crazed kids and a soft spot for rescue animals. The good news is, the "pet" roaches found a home... somewhere else.

Rain Ryland moves in with his aunt after his mother died, leaving him an orphan. He’s had a tough go of things his whole life practically, living in a shelter, living on the streets…so when he moves in with his aunt, he really was expecting much of anything to happen for the remaining months until he turns eighteen. But New Wurzburg, the quiet little town that is now home, is about to become a whole lot more interesting when he collides with Friederike Burkhart.
Freddie isn’t like normal girls, in fact, she’s so far removed from normal, it’s what draws Rain to her in the first place. There’s an air of mystery surrounding Freddie though as you may have already guessed it, Freddie’s secret is that she’s a werewolf, and they are plenty of them in town! What was unexpected was the inclusion of witches known as Weavers. In fact, there’s a very detailed history between the Weavers and the werewolves, also known as Watchers. The Watchers basically act as protectors for the Weavers when they are “weaving” their magic. Weaving magic leaves them vulnerable, so the Watchers, watch out for them.
Freddie is slated to be alpha as her late father was the alpha of the pack before his untimely murder. Freddie hasn’t been the same since it happened and since his aunt just happens to work at the sheriff’s office, Rain is determined to find out what happened. He’s not going all out on trying to solve the murder, but he’s doing everything possible to find a lead or something that might have been overlooked by the police who have written it up as an accidental death.
This was a rather different take on the werewolf love story! Or really, any paranormal love story, for time and again, I am so used to seeing the male paranormal type and the human female type falling in love and overcoming obstacles! Truly, (in regards of YA) I think the last time I read a book where the girl was the werewolf falling in love with a human boy was Blood and Chocolate, which is still one of my all-time favorite reads! So Mary’s book was like a breath of fresh air in that area!
The mystery behind Freddie’s dad’s murder was intriguing, as were the politics at play concerning the Watchers and Weavers. There is definitely a lot to be learned here and I think it was somewhere in the middle of trying to learn about the Watcher/Weaver relationship that things got a little muddy. It was hard to truly grasp the reasons behind the adversity. I think that’s where my biggest problem laid, if I can’t really get an idea of their past relationship, understanding the present time one isn’t going to happen without difficulties. Though I was able to get the general idea of it all, so I wasn’t totally lost within the story.
The romance between Rain and Freddie wasn’t what you expect either and I loved that! Yes, when boy meets girl, we expect them to fall in love and have so many problems they’d have to overcome to be together. But here, Rain will learn his first hurdle will actually be to get Freddie to like him! It’s not necessarily a love-hate relationship, but Freddie has been known to keep her guard up and it’s clear that she tries to protect Rain from her world…another trope we often see in these paranormal/human relationships. Their relationship was pretty intense though in some ways and I honestly couldn’t get enough of these two.
The ending was pretty shocking! There was more at play than a simple murder mystery and the results were earth shattering! I wasn’t expecting for several things to happen, at least not in the first book, as there is a second one planned! Whether that one will be a direct sequel or more of a companion has yet to be revealed. I almost want to root for a companion sort of sequel because I felt very content with where Mary left things. It was very complete and settled with the knowledge that a future remains…for some that is! Mary definitely put a whole new spin on werewolves for me and I must say I quite enjoyed it and cannot wait for more! I am already looking into her backlist!
Overall Rating 4/5 stars
I went into reading Haven having read the blurb. I still had no idea what the story was about. From the beginning, the story had me intrigued and that intrigue continued as the mystery kept getting deeper and deeper.
Seventeen-year-old Aaron “Rain” Ryland arrives in New Wurzburg, a small town in Texas Hill Country, after his mother dies in a Houston area shelter. He’s surprised that his mother had a sister that he knew nothing about and is even more surprised at the things he discovers about his family. Friederike “Freddie” Burkhart isn’t your typical seventeen-year-old girl. She was conceived, born, and raised to be a leader. Freddie and Rain establish a friendship and that friendship grows to be so much more. But there are those who don’t want her to lead and view Rain’s presence as a threat. Soon, Rain and Freddie find themselves in a race against time to figure out who’s trying to kill them and stop Freddie from fulfilling her destiny.
First and foremost, I LOVED the characters of Rain and Freddie. They’re simply amazing. They’re strong characters on their own and even stronger and better together. Both believe in doing what’s right, no matter what it might cost them. Both are strong-willed and refuse to back down. I loved that there was a huge mystery/suspense element to this story. The secondary characters definitely help in keeping you guessing as to what was happening.
For me, Haven was all about trying to figure out what was going on in the town of New Wurzburg and who you could and couldn’t trust. For that reason, I’m not going to get into all the details. Haven was an addictive read. It’s like Twilight and Grimm rolled together. While there is conspiracy and murder, this story is so much more. Haven is about family, friendship, young love, and believing in yourself. Ultimately, it’s about finding out where you belong and where your safe haven is.

Aaron „Rain“ Ryland lives a hard life on the street with his addicted mother, moving from shelter to shelter. When his mother dies, he is sent to his only relative, an aunt he had no knowledge of, living in a very very rural small town right in the middle of nowhere. This starts a whole can of revelations about himself, his mother and the reasons behind a lot of seemingly random moves. And he gets to know Freddy, a tough girl with a group of guys who are always around her. And although she seems to like Rain immediately (yep, the insta-thing is one of the few things I didn’t overly love), she warns him off. Tells him, she is dangerous. As a reader of loads of UF, YA, and PNR, I knew from the first moment on that she was a werewolf. And she is cool and although not too well fleshed-out, she is a welcome diversion as a beauty who is also the beast. Rain is still the pretty ordinary alpha-male, thinking, he has to protect the girl, yaddayaddayadda. But although I don’t really know what a young man sounds like in his head, this 3rd person POV of his did ring true.
The story is a good one and I appreciated that especially Rain’s relationship to his aunt is so well written. The romance between the Rain and Freddy was alright, but made a lot more interesting because we have only Rain‘s POV. And Freddy doesn’t behave too predictable, so that was that.
The world building was enhanced by a complicated political net in the small town concerning the werewolves themselves, their connection to the resident witches and I especially loved that it was not too easy to tell the good guys from the bad guys. It takes a rather long timel until the whole spiel is revealed and that was one of the factors that kept me glued to the pages. If you like a slightly different take on the „YA-werewolf-take“, „Haven“ is for you. Oh and it’s a standalone novel for a change. And a well written one.
