Haven's Flight will make you search deep within yourself to see if you have the courage and strength to trust in God when your Goliath looms over you. When your normal becomes the stuff nightmares are made of, will you succumb or overcome? Just how creative can you get when all routes of escape appear blocked?
Deftly written, including a killer ending, Haven's Flight will have you looking over your shoulder to make sure you're not being followed.
I read this book in just a few days, in between doing many other necessary things; kept finding ways to squeeze in a few minutes of reading, to keep going -- it was quite gripping.
I can be a cynical, rational type of person and I very much liked that this story's facts held together and made sense. Rather than "painting" a story, it's more like the author has architected a three-dimensional structure of a story. Well done!
This freshman outing from Dena Netherton is an intriguing and engrossing story of Haven, still recovering from the trauma of her mother's murder, and desperate to find relief from the paralyzing anxiety that chases her. While on a wilderness retreat, she senses that she's being watched, and when she receives news that a family member has been injured, she sets off on her own to get to them. So begins a harrowing journey facing down monsters... both imagined and real.
The characters are engaging, and Mrs. Netherton keeps the plot moving. The story never drags, and in fact, once I had an extended opportunity to really get into the story, I couldn't put it down!
My one "complaint," if such it can be called, is no different than the issue I have with most books in the "Christian" fiction genre, and that is that despite the inclusion of a couple extended quotations of Bible passages, there isn't much uniquely CHRISTIAN about the book; it's inspirational, yes, and the faith perspective is Judeo-Christian, but there's not much of Christ in this. That would never stop me reading it or recommending it, but given the reality that our relationship with God is only open because of Jesus Christ's finished work on the cross and His resurrection from the dead, I struggle to call something "Christian" that leaves Him out.
But as I said, that doesn't stop me from enjoying it and recommending it, and I look forward to reading more from Mrs. Netherton's pen!
