Hawaii/Needful Things - 3 DVD Set (Amazon.com Exclusive)

This 3 DVD collection features two Max Van Sydow classics – as a man of the cloth and as a demonic presence in a Stephen King thriller.

Hawaii - This restored film version of the best-seller by James Michener stars a remarkable cast in a celebrated epic adventure that traces the arrival of missionaries in 1820's Hawaii and the eventual devastation of a paradise lost. Featuring Julie Andrews.

Needful Things - A mysterious new shop opens in a small town which always seems to stock the deepest desires of each shopper, with a price far heavier than expected. Ed Harris stars.

When sold by Amazon.com, this product will be manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. Amazon.com's standard return policy will apply.

The reason for the low rating is that this version is short of 30 minites of material from the original of the film. Also the film print is of poor quality for the scenes that are there. It appears to b a dupe of a VHS tape. And finally the film switches to a second disc in the middle of a deathbed scene which results in an extremely poor viewing experience. Hawaii originally had an intermission which would have been the ideal place to put the disc switch.

I bought this combo pack exclusively for the film Hawaii. It's represented that this is the restored version of the film and the running time is identified as longer than the single DVD version of Hawaii released by MGM a few years ago and that now sells for about $75. I have the MGM DVD. The MGM DVD does not represent to be the restored version. It is at least 20 minutes shorter than the full version, but the MGM DVD does have the overture. The combo pack is the very same version as on the MGM DVD--it is not the restored version and, on top of that, the combo pack doesn't have the overture. Skip the combo pack and, unless MGM releases a future restored version, then the current highly priced MGM DVD is better than nothing, but the laserdisc version is the actual full movie with overture, intermission, entr'acte, and exit movie and uncut. That's the standard for this film

Watched Hawaii and was very disappointed. I have seen the full version of Hawaii and I noticed in this one, many scenes had been cut. I am still looking for the original version. I hav not watched the other DVD - Needful Things, so cannot rate it.

I should have read the description more closely. It was manufactured "on demand" as cheaply as possible and neither film contains subtitles or close-captions. I'm hard of hearing, Without subtitles or, at minimum, close captions, the product is useless for me. Trust me, I won't make this mistake again.

After reading the reviews before I ordered this movie (Hawaii), I was not sure what I would get or if I would like the movie. I had not seen the movie. I watched it, with the whole family last night. I thought the characters were portraited fairly honestly, not as perfect or totally evil. Those who are haters of Christianity will, of course, see what they want to see in it no matter the topic or evidence.

The quality of the DVD was good, it played shorter (about 2 hr 45 min) then the 3 hrs 19 minutes that was written on the dvd cover.

Buying this set was the only economical way of getting this movie on dvd.

Hawaii was my preference and I do not regret it at all. I am a long time Michener fan, miss his works so very much, and this is a nice work to have. Stephen King's works do not escape my love of books... he kept me reading then my Son became a fan.

Some while ago I streamed Hawaii and quite enjoyed it . While Hawaii is indeed missing musical segments that served as bookends and a break during it's theatrical showing , things which "I" felt the film did not merit owing to it's relatively unremarkable story , one does get a fantastic price and the swell Needful Things feature as well . All for around ten bucks . That's more than fair to me . In fact , pretty exceptional . Only needs subtitles to make it awesome . Many are the Warner Archive films I purchase without subtitle however .

I could honestly care less about Hawaii as a movie, but Needful Things is one of my favorite Stephen King novels-turned-movie, and this was one of the only ways to get it non-digitally.
