This author is fast becoming one of my all-time favorites. Her stories leap off the page and grabs you without mercy. In Hawaiian Lei, you are transported across the pacific, to an Island who imagery is described to perfection. It is done so beautifully you become a part of the story. Like quicksand, you’ll sink into the story. You feel so invested in the scenery and characters. Their chemistry is such you want their relationship to succeed.
The story starts off with a glimpse into the life of the main character, an incredibly handsome young man. A life, he’s tired of, bored with mind numbing meaningless relationships, he longs for something more fulfilling. Even his muse as left him, a sad place to be for an artist. His sister invites him to visit her on the Island, where he meets an equally stunning, mouth-watering man, who clearly has a few emotional issues of his own.
However, when these two get together magic happens. Their spirits are so connected, it melts the reader and forces them to continue to read this compelling love story. The internal conflict within these men sparks a number of emotions within the reader. You will laugh, smile, feel the sexual chemistry and cry with them. The scenes are hot to sizzling. Expertly written to tantalize the senses, and put every nerve ending in the reader’s body on fire. A great book loved it, loved it, loved it.
Matt Quintal is a painter from New Zeeland, a mystic by nature and in search of something he had forgot. He realizes that he had lost his way and the world is breaking his spirit after one too many meanless one-night stands in L.A. Luckily his sister calls and he runs to Hawaii, the break he needed.
His attraction to pilot Beau Toyama is instant and, we find out later on, most likely foretold by Beau's deceased mother. Now, you would think that this makes the book a paranormal romance. Wrong. Yes it has some mystic, well- paranormal elements, but they're blended in the story, a normal occurrence, nothing out of the ordinary. You get the same feeling like when you're having a deja vu or some weird coincidences happened, only it's much more than that happening around these two characters. The focus is not on that, but on their soul' journey to love and a life together. As I said, beautiful.
The story is not out of the ordinary. They meet, they like and fall in love. Sure they have past hurts to surpass. Beau had a rough childhood and still mourns his mother, Matt ran away from commitment almost all his life and has his own issues with his father. There is some past abuse going on, broken families and broken trust. All those good conflicts that make a good story. What makes this story exceptional is that it's not focused on the past hurts or present conflicts, it focuses on the main characters' road to healing and new beginnings. The author's perspective is unique, the nostalgic island air and the colorful cultures portrayed leave you breathless and checking flights on the internet. I know I did, I wanted to go to that magical island portrayed right away to recapture my lost days in the sun.
Sure some phrases seemed a bit formal or clinic, some I didn't understood at all, lol. That was more than okay, the book didn't let me forget that it was different and took my attention from the written form of the words to their meaning and what they expressed. There is magic in this book, not the kind you see in paranormal books, but everyday magic that we don't notice until it is pointed to us. Nature's magic and soul magic. As natural as breathing and so we forget it exists. Reading about it is an wonderful experience.
And if I didn't gush enough until now, I'll say it clear. I highly recommend this book and urge you to keep an open mind and feel what it tries to say. If you do that, I'm sure you'll have the wonderful experience I had and maybe it will even nudge you to reevaluate what's really important in life and gain a bit of perspective in your own journey through this world.
I don't know how many dragons I should give. Lol. 4.5? 5? I think I'm hesitating more out of personal reasons (I'm still looking for plane tickets and I see not a chance of running away to Hawaii in the near future. That makes me grumpy :) )
Mahalo nui for the beautiful and heartfelt story. I can truly feel your soul, your essence, on every page. Loved every bit of it and loved the tears that flowed at the end. Your characters are beyond true to life and your writing style is sublimely excellent. Way to go, girl!!! I am starting book 2, Hawaiian Orchid, now.....can't wait!! I know it will be an intense and passionate read....oh, boy!! Literally....LOL ;-))
