Hawaiian Plant Life has been written with both the layperson and professional interested in Hawai‘i’s natural history and flora in mind. Excellent book about Hawaiian flora

We bought this book prior to a natural history-focused trip to Hawaii. We glanced over it enough prior to our trip to realize we had to take it with us. It was very useful for reading during our evenings and, after returning, we find it essential reference to describe what we say and identify what we photographed. The first 50 pages or so are introductory chapters on the Hawaiian landscapes and climate, the origin and evolution of the flora and the plant communities on the islands. I say "introductory" but the content and writing style is relatively sophisticated and written for those with some appreciation of evolution and botanical concepts. These chapters are crucial to a better appreciation of what you are seeing in Hawaii. Then the rest of the book contains descriptions of most of the plants and ferns in the islands. Excellent photos throughout and relatively easy to read - even for non specialists (good balance even for botany/ecology savvy people). We highly recommend this book - considering what you'll pay for a Hawaiian "vacation" this book is a steal.

Many plants do not have pictures or the pictures have poor angles. Yes, all plants have a description but pictures or at least an artist's rendition would've been helpful. However, the pictures that are provided are beautiful. A good coffee table book but not a useful or very functional book for plant identification. Disappointing.
