It does not have the tow package from the factory which included a trans cooler, 2inch hitch, and 3.73 gears
Mine had stock the class 2 1.25" hitch and 3.55's
I added the 2 inch hitch but NOT the gears. Instead I partly justified that by buying this cooler as it is alot bigger than I really otherwise needed (about 2-3x the size of the stock tow package cooler).
the tow rating on my Explorer with a tow package is 5,300lbs, with the V8 it is 6900
So knowing that the vehicle was rated for the weight (I would only be lacking 20 horse and 30 torque) I decided to take my Explorer to tow my buddies Jeep that broke down...twice.
Even with the 3.55's 7000lbs behind the Explorer and pulling a 10% grade for 4 miles or so (I live in a mountainous area) the transmission never overheated or gave me any trouble. The cooler did its job under max conditions and kept my trans cool. Don't know how much else you can ask for.
Installation was easy on my Ford and took about 2 hours including a transmission flush and fill since I had the lines disconnected. I've towed about 2000 miles through the summer after installing this cooler, including one trip that involved a long haul up a steep incline in 101 degree weather, and the transmission temperature has not exceeded 175 degrees. While there may be more expensive options out there, this was easy to install and has more than met my desired needs. It's a cheap way to protect a transmission from costly damage, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking to improve the cooling system on their transmission.
The Hayden 679 "just" fits. I had to create my own brackets for mounting. The trans oil lines on the 2500 with an 8.1L engine come up through just left and right of center under the radiator. The Hayden connectors are almost perfectly in line with the trans lines. Simply cut the lines, remove the old trans cooler, flair the tubes, and use 3 to 4 inches of included hose to connect the lines. The nice part about this is it is impossible for the hose to come off. The hoses can't go down. There's a bend in both trans lines that won't allow this. The hoses can't go up, the cooler is in the way. If the cooler performs well pulling my travel trailer then I'll be really pleased.
