Review

Haydn was looking to the future but he was simultaneously tied to the emotional world of the past. With period instruments, one can better recreate the expression of those emotions. --Ottavio Dantone

Joseph Haydn has been so indelibly dubbed the Father of the Symphony that it s often forgotten that the symphony in something like its Classical form had been extant for over two decades before he entered the fray. However, his was the first and certainly the most prolific major contribution to the genre, and its influential repercussions were
felt Europe-wide during his lifetime and well into the nineteenth century. Over a compositional career stretching over half a century, Haydn was at the forefront of the symphony s journey from the noble ballroom to the public concert hall, and developed it to a High Classical peak of perfection that would lead the way to Beethoven and beyond. --David Threasher, booklet notes
