After reading the other review on this heater I would like to say my experience is that this heater does a fantastic job heating our 32 x 16 foot pool. The heater we had previously was installed by the pool company and it last only 6 years (rusted out). Not only did the our previous heat last only 6 years the pool company had to come out every year of that six years and replace something resulting in a $500 to $800 repair bill. First heater $4,500 to purchase and install through local pool company plus over $3,000 in repair bills.

We ordered this heater through Amazon and it was delivered to our office. My husband and a friend installed it and it has been running fantastic for the past two years. Not only does it heat the pool much quicker than the other and uses much less gas. It seems the design on this one is much better as the rain does not just pour into the top vent. I live in the Pacific NW and there are not too many days I can go out and jump in an unheated pool. Total costs thus far $1,800 no repair bills, lower gas bill and lots of happy swim hours.

I purchased a Hayward 400,000 btu propane pool heater in 2000. Look at the photo of this one. See the digital control panel there on the front/top edge of the unit? After 9 years, the seal on this panel deteriorated and rain made it's way into the electronic panel, which shorted the unit out while burning-up the wiring in a very smokey display of dangerously poor design. The panel melted. The fire department said we were fortunate that the fire had not spread to other areas of our property here in the Austin, Texas area.

Upon writing Hayward soon after the unit caught on fire and was destroyed, they failed to respond. This is why I'm writing this today, to warn you about these Hayward pool heaters and the Hayward company's lack of responsiveness when their heaters catch on fire and burn up.

I will continue to tell the truth about these heaters and this company. Nobody enjoys being ignored, especially when attempting to communicate with a manufacturer regarding their poorly designed, dangerous products.

I'll update when it starts heating water. (First update below) The product came right to the house. It comes on a pallet and is screwed to the pallet. You have to unscrew one screw from the outside bottom, and two screws by opening and going inside the door of the heater. I need the propane company and electrician to come hook it up this week. I am going to take care of the plumbing myself with pvc. The slab I put in for the cement was in the wrong spot. The propane company only left about 3 feet extra when they buried the copper. When I looked to see where the heater would actually go, I saw where the water connections, electric connections, and propane connections went. I should have checked that out before I dug the propane trench. So now, the only inconvenience is that the pvc is going to have to run about 5 feet to the heater and 5 feet back instead of 2 feet there and 2 feet back. Does it heat the pool? I don't know yet. But the information above would have been handy 2 weeks ago.

CONTD - 6/3 - Heater is hooked up. Don't forget to turn on the propane. When you set the heater to 'pool' and then set the 'temperature', the heater fires up in a few seconds. This heater with a 35,000 gallon pool heats about a degree and a half per hour. The top of the water is warmer because of the depth of the deep end. The pool was 68 degrees on about May 15th. I heated the pool for 5 hours one day and the pool was in the mid-high 70's. I heated the pool the next weekend and it was in the low 80's and I have not used the heater since.

Everyone seems pleased with the water temperature ever since. (Middletown NY)

Great heater, easy to install and provides good service. Couple of points you should be aware of with any pool heater. First, if you live in a hot climate, make sure all of your equipment is shaded. Your pump(s), heater, chlorinator, even the filter will last longer if they are out of the direct sun. Make sure your installer follows the installation instructions and keeps all of the clearances around the heater, bonds the heater to the pump and other electrical equipment, and adds the pressure relief valve. Some installers will skip some of the requirements and say it's not required by local code, there is a reason that these items are required. If your heater does not have a cover over control panel, add one: Hayward H-FD Series Pool Heater Protective All-Aluminum Metal Cover MANUFACTURED BY INSYNC ENGINEERING. If you're a seasonal pool user, turn off the gas and electric to the heater and cover the heater over the winter. If you have a problem with vermin, put a bait trap near (not under!) the heater. Keeps the rats out of the wiring.
If your heater starts to light intermittently, have the gas manifold and jets cleaned first! Service people want to sell you parts and most of the time the burners just need the spiders cleaned out of the manifold (undo 12 screws and bolts and use pipe cleaner or paperclip). If you do buy any replacement parts, make sure you get the replaced parts when the repair is finished. You properly just bought a spare for the next time unless the roof rats ate the insulation off of the wires or the control box is full of bugs.
If you seldom use your heater and it sets idle most of the time, fire in up once a week or so. Let it run for 10 minutes to heat up. You can ask your pool guy to fire it up whenever he's at you pool.
