Messiah is an English word that comes from the Hebrew word pronounced maw-shee’-akh. It appears in most English Bibles as the phrase “anointed one.” In the Jewish Tanakh (Old Testament), the term is used almost exclusively to denote a king or priest who was anointed with the holy oil of office, or to describe a prophet who was anointed with the holy spirit to be the voice of God to his people. Today, the hope for a coming Messiah—an Anointed One who will usher in an age of universal peace—is shared by many Christians and Jews alike, with one important difference: Jews believe that their long-awaited Messiah is yet to come to establish and reign over a restored kingdom of Israel. Christians believe that Jesus came to Israel during his first advent as the Servant Messiah of Isaiah, a Redeemer who atoned for the sins of Israel and all mankind, and that he will one day return as King Messiah to reign over Israel and the world. The similar but distinct views held by Christians and Jews about the fulfillment of Israel’s Messianic hope and the identity of its Messiah are nothing new. As far back as New Testament times, leaders of the Pharisees sent emissaries to John the Baptist, asking if he was the Messiah. John told them that he was not, instead pointing to Jesus as the Lamb of God and Redeemer of Israel, but later revealed his own confusion about the messiahship of Jesus when he sent messengers to ask him, “Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?” Fortunately, the time of the Messiah’s coming two-thousand years ago is clearly specified in the Hebrew Bible, in the Book of Daniel, chapter 9, verses 24-27, and, together with what we know about rabbinic Judaism’s long and unsuccessful search for a Messiah since then, it is now possible to show that Jesus is the only person in history with a legitimate claim to be the Jewish Messiah.

The text of the Bible has proven itself to be accurate as handed down to us today, and it is a trustworthy source of God's wisdom that is freely available to everyone. I believe that understanding the Bible is the most important thing an intelligent person can do to prepare for the future. It offers in its pages the only verifiable source of knowledge direct from the mind of God, wisdom that can help us make sense of this multi-faceted modern age.

As a researcher, I specialize in the interpretation of Bible prophecy and harmonization of Ancient Near East chronology. In 1974, I understood from my research the importance of an ancient Bible prophecy recorded in the Book of Daniel that foretold the restoration of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem to Jewish sovereignty ... a 2,500 year old prophecy that had been fulfilled seven years earlier during the Six-Day War in 1967 while the whole world watched it happen on television ... and I eventually understood how it could be used to unlock all of the chrono-specific prophecies in Daniel for interpretation.

The result was my commentary on the Book of Daniel, titled Daniel Unsealed, which is considered by those who have read it to be the definitive work on that book of the Bible. It offers interpretations that exactly agree with both the Biblical text and documented history, as all true interpretations of Bible prophecy must. In addition, it fully explains the predictive prophecies in Daniel in plain language, and it does so without the usual academic equivocations employed by most Bible scholars.

I also do research into Ancient Near East chronology, having published several books that challenge the traditional Hebrew kings chronology (the Edwin Thiele chronology) anchored by the Assyrian eponym list. My research demonstrates that the traditional Assyrian timeline used in academia is in error prior to the year 745 B.C., and that the Hebrew chronology for that period, when properly understood and applied as specified in the Bible, is more accurate and can be used to correct all ANE chronologies.

However, if you are unfamiliar with the Bible, and specifically the Book of Daniel, you more than likely won't be able to fully appreciate my books. I invite you to try, though. I’m very surprised that after 6 years, No one else has reviewed this.

If it’s not obvious from the title, the burden of Bruce’s book is to show that Yeshua - more commonly know as Jesus - is the long-awaited Jewish Messiah (Gk. “Christ”). However, this book is different from most approaches that rely on Isaiah 53, or on historical evidences for Yeshua’s claims and resurrection (which are in themselves formidable and valuable). Instead, Bruce looks to the famous “Seventy Weeks” prophecy in the book of Daniel and shows how Jesus and Jesus alone could fulfill it.

Bruce’s argument rests on the observation that many Christian expositors, in order to, allow a gap for the seven year tribulation period typically held by a dispensational eschatology, will try to align Jesus’s first coming with the 69th week of Daniel and assume that we are currently in a sort of holding period before the 70th week begins. In order to line up the chronology in this way, expositors typically have to arbitrarily resort to fudging the calendar by using Babylonian years or the Julian calendar or the Hebrew calendar to get as close as they can. Bruce provides a compelling argument from history and the text itself that this approach is unfounded.

Unfortunately, as someone who holds the dispensational view which is built on the backbone of the “seventieth week”, this idea really screws with my eschatology. I have not yet been able to work out end result of this. If the seventieth week is already fulfilled, can I still hold my own view?

It should be noted that this book is entirely devoted to the idea of proving Jesus/Yeshua as the Jewish messiah and is not a book on end times prophecy. As a book on Christology and messianic prophecy, it seems very helpful for Jewish evangelism (not being Jewish or involved in Jewish evangelism, I can’t know that from personal experience). It does have ramifications for eschatology, though.
