“When we approach God humbly and bow down before Him,
we put ourselves in a position to hear from Him.”
Are you longing to hear God’s voice but feeling disconnected?
God wants to speak directly to each of His beloved children—not to just a few “spiritual elite”. Priscilla Shirer looks at God’s call to Samuel and uncovers six characteristics essential for hearing from God:
¿ A simple RELATIONSHIP—unfettered by sin or pride.
¿ A single-minded WORSHIP—focused on God and His glory.
¿ A set-apart HOLINESS—determined to live a life that honors Him.
¿ A still ATTENTIVENESS—willing to be silent before Him.
¿ A sold-out HUNGER—passionately pursuing God’s presence.
¿ A servant SPIRIT—submitted to God’s call.
Her warmth and honesty, combined with a wealth of practical help, will inspire you to cultivate these traits in your own life. By doing so, you will prepare yourself to draw closer to Him and to hear His voice more clearly.

The study focuses on why young Samuel heard the voice of God, and how we (particularly women) can be more directed and transformed by Him. The author is not afraid to get to your heart and ask tough questions.
Note: "hearing from God" is not charasmatic in this book, but it pushes the reader to dig into the word of God for true understanding and transformation. The "homework" questions are open-ended, rather than fill in the blank, but very manageable to do for a weekly study.
Hot public topics (wives submitting to husbands, homosexuality, legalism, and more) are in this study. This might present a challenge in group discussions, but don't shy away from it! Take the lead from the author and concentrate on your own heart, rather than the failings of anyone else, and you'll find true value in this book.
Our group has grown (in numbers, faith, and relationship with each other) during the course of this study.
Priscilla's writing style is easy to read, personable, humorous and her points flow very naturally. She is so personable it feels like I know her as a sister and friend. She backs up her insights with scripture. The book is loaded with wisdom and practical application for ones daily walk with God. Likewise the truths are simple and easy to understand and follow. There are questions to reflect on and a prayer at the end of each section.
There were so many words and revelations that spoke to me, uplifted me, encouraged, convicted, humbled me and to get on my hands and knees and made me cry. God has spoken to me during this time and called me his daughter - "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace." The God of the universe wants to have a relationship with me and delights in me. This is awesome news!
God has been teaching me a lot during the time I have read this book and Discerning the Voice of God. Some of the areas He is been teaching me is to wait and trust in Him. Let His plan be my plan and in obedience to follow Him. Surrender my day over to Him before I do anything else in the morning... Not because I feel I have to - but out of my love and respect for Jesus. Another critical area I learned was to battle the stronghold of negative thinking with the armor of God, using the helmet of salvation and the sword to the Spirit and His word. Our thoughts are one have the hardest areas to control.
In the midst of reading this book - He has been revealing His character to me and speaking to me and it is awesome!Read more ›
The thing we didn't like is that there are too many questions and verses to look up (especially the first 3 chapters) that didn't even seem to belong in the lesson. It was frustrating. We finally decided that we would watch her teaching and discuss the teaching immediately thereafter. Before we came together each week were were to have read the chapter and answered the questions throughout the week we wanted to answer. No one was pressured to do the homework. While this worked for us this time, this is not typically how I faciliate a study. The way we finally did it, watching the video teaching and discussing it immediately we had the best discussions ever. Each group needs to figure out how to do this study that will work for their group.
