If you like this genre, you'd have to agree that this is a fantastic dark comedy. It's not slapstick or gross-out--just an interesting story with lots of irony and lots of twists. I loved this movie because it's so unpredictable and things go from bad to worse all because of a questionable decision made at the beginning of the story. This is not "the greatest movie ever made" (see earlier review), but it definitely doesn't stink. It's very clever and you will probably want to see it again to pick up on some of the subtleties.
I was very pleasantly surprised because I hadn't heard of it at the theaters and yet it was such a treat to watch. In my opinion, this was much more enjoyable and creative than There's Something About Mary. In fact, I think it's Cameron Diaz's best movie. If you like her work, you owe it to yourself to rent it. Harvey Keitel is also excellent as the husband.
And if you're reading this Cameron, will you marry me? :-)

Not a review of the movie, just the picture quality of this particular blu-ray. It looks like an upscan of a dvd at best; in fact, I think the dvd has better picture quality. It's a shame that a really fun movie like this (and Cameron Diaz never looked better in the theatrical release, in my opinion) gets such a lousy release in "high definition."

Sad.

This is the version with the FSK 12 age warning on the cover. There is another German Region B Blu-ray release, but the cover is identical except for the FSK 12 warning, so if anyone has that version I'd like to hear how the picture quality is!

I cant beleive im the first person to review this film. Its so about time it was released on DVD. Well Art House movies dont always get my attention but this flick is brilliant. Harvey Keitel and Cameron Diaz dazzle in the story about a high profile judge who weds a previous defendant in one of his court cases, though she is at least 30 years his junior!! Things just seem to get tougher for Diaz as the movie goes on to hide her ex (dead)lover in their house on a beautiful island off the Boston coast.
The scenery is fantastic, the acting superb, this movie will take you away from the everyday. Soundtrack is excellent. Enjoy

No doubt about it, I like Cameron Diaz. She is the prototypical California girl. In this movie she plays Nathalie the wife of Harvey Keitel who's character is a Judge. Nathalie is a loveable wife in this May September marriage and her mishaps cause poor George more problems then the law would ever allow. Great supporting cast, never a dull moment in the action. This one is a must see.

I absolutely LOVE this movie...it's original, the first time I saw it I couldn't believe how clever it was...this was when Cameron Diaz was at her most beautiful and Billy Zane is so gorgeous... and just the whole idea of the movie is unique, never seen anything like it before or since...a must see...please give this movie your time, you won't regret it.

Released in 1996, "Head above Water" is a black/romantic dramedy about a couple living on an island off the coast of Maine (Harvey Keitel and Cameron Diaz) and their grounds keeper (Craig Sheffer). A series of serious problems arise when the girl's ex-boyfriend visits while the guys are on a fishing trip (Billy Zane).

This is a generally entertaining farce highlighted by the beauty of both Diaz and the coastal locations. While the plot is simple you have to pay attention or you'll miss various twists where the viewer is led to believe one thing, which is then proved false by further information. I didn't pay attention too well the first time I viewed it and therefore discovered some enlightening elements on my second viewing.

BOTTOM LINE: "Head above Water" isn't bad at all, but it's not great either, although it has an interesting subtext (see below). At any rate, it's a must for Diaz fans (as well as Keitel and Sheffer) and those who love the Maine coast.

The film runs 96 minutes and was shot in Phippsburg, Maine.

GRADE: Borderline B-/C+

***SPOILER ALERT*** (Don't read further if you haven't seen the movie)

The subtext is obvious: Beautiful women equal death (think Metallica's DEATH MAGNETIC). In the movie Natalie is indirectly the cause of death of all the men, which include: the bad boy (Kent), the fatherly husband (George), her best friend from childhood who's always had a crush on her (Lance), and the policeman at the end seeking to save a damsel in distress.

Before buying this DVD had not seen this movie for nearly six years. None of the cable or local channels no longer play this movie. I thought it had a really interesting plot. I am sure most of you know what this movie is about. Cameron Diaz is smoking hot in this movie. If you are into dark comedies i recommend picking this one up.

Most Enjoyable, with excellent performances from Harvey and Cameron Diaz. Well worth watching. The photographic work and locations are also pleasing to the eye
