I first got The Monkees Headquarters back in 1968 when I was 12.Well, I'm 62 now and now I got it on CD and I still love it.It went to No. 1 on The Billboard Charts in June 1967 and went multi-platinum.This was the first album to reach No.1 without a single being released from the album.Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork said "Headquarters" was their personal favorite Monkee album. They fired their record producer,Don Kirshner;(he said in an interview, the only time he ever got fired;) and got to play their own insturments;like they wanted to on their first two albums but they wouldn't let them, using studio musicians instead.Chip Douglas of The Turtles produced and played occasional Bass and he also wrote "Forget That Girl" which Davy Jones sings lead vocal on. The group created a garage band sound.
Davy sings lead on "Shades of Grey",a great song by future Rock&Roll of Fame members, the husband and wife writing team, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.Davy sings lead on Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart's "I Cant't Get Her Off My Mind",and on the mellow "Early Morning Blues and Greens".And,he plays the percussion on the songs.
Mike Nesmith wrote and sings lead on "You Told Me";"You Just May Be The One" and "Sunny Girlfriend" his foray into Country-Rock.And,he co-wrote "No Time" and plays lead guitar on the songs.Micky sings lead vocals on Boyce&Hart's "I'll Spend My Life With You" and "Mr.Webster";co-wrote and sings lead on "No Time";he wrote and sings lead on "Randy Scouse Git" and plays the drums on the songs. Then, there's the funny monkeying around on "Band 6" and "ZILCH".
Peter's contribution is singing the other lead vocal on "Shades of Grey";playing keyboards, guitar and banjo;and his best effort,"For Pete's Sake" which he co-wrote with Micky singing lead vocal,(which they decided to use as the closing theme on their television series.) With the lyrics,"We were born to love one another. This is something we all need. And,what we gotta be..... is free.We gotta be free! We gotta be free!

I like this album, its one of my favorites of the 1960's and I think the Monkees most interesting album. However, why is the price tag $29? Its only two discs with mono and stereo versions of the album, which is nice, and bonus tracks, but come on, twenty nine dollars for two CD's? Feels like a bit of a rip off to me, it should have been more like $19 at most. Plus the essay inside talking about the album is a couple of paragraphs written by a fan boy with nothing new to say. I'll make sure in the future to either wait for a sale for this type of two disc deluxe edition or buy it used. Not worth $29.

I'm glad I wasn't paying attention to the reviews or I may have passed this by. The Stack-O-Tracks vinyl is only the musical tracks. That said, it's the tracks remixed and mastered and they sound really good, as opposed to the thin originals meant for AM car radios. I'm assuming the point here is to show that the Monkees played the instruments on this LP, and this is what they sounded like. For what it is intended for, and for the sound quality, I rank this high. BTW, you get to hear the individually recorded vocal tracks of Zilch. This is fun. But beware and don't be surprised, or you may be disappointed.

That pretty much says it all. If you're a Monkees fan like me, then this album (in which they rebelled against authority by making sure that they got to be solely responsible for the music they were putting out) is an absolute MUST!

I tried in vain to find an original 1967 copy of this album on Colgems Records, I gave up and purchased a new LP on 180 gram vinyl on Sundazed Records. Unfortunately the new record does not have the sound quality as the original LP on Colgems or the 1986 re-issue from Rhino. The studio engineers on the Sundazed re-issue made a drastic cut on the high end for this record. But the sound is still good and clean, just not as bright as before. Musically this is The Monkees first effort to play their own music after getting out from under the control of Don Kirshner and the put out a great album in the summer of 1967. Though the music leans toward a country sound in places and is a departure from the sound of The Monkees first two studio records."Headquarters" is also the first LP I had ever purchased (as I got my first record player that summer) and I played this record a lot until I was able to buy my next new new record which was "The Monkees", their first album. I liked that record but never as much as "Headquarters"

Like a number of folks my age we remember the Monkees fondly. Mostly from they're tv show and most remember a few of the songs as well. I have had a greatest hits album for years but for some reason lately wanted to hear some of the albums they produced especially the later ones they did without Don krishner. I have to say they are much better then I remember and this holds up very well. Many people have said lately the Monkees deserve a spot In the rock and roll hall of fame and I would have to agree. They are certainly more deserving then some of the bands I see there and I think people tend to forget they're contributions to our culture from that period. In fact many people considered them the American version of the Beatles. Probably not that far from the truth. Even the Fab Four viewed them as they're major competition for a while back then. This is well worth the time and money to step back in time.

I ordered this as a replacement for the album I had when I was younger. It's an excellent album and the songs are great. Every song on the album is good. It reminds me of my very early childhood. It was one of the first records I owned.

Classic Monkees!

Their first album once they bought themselves into independence, a great look at what kinds of music they actually wanted to produce. As such, it's still classic Monkees all the way!
