On May 2, 1999, after her election to the Turkish Parliament, 30-year-old Merve Kavakci walked into the Turkish Grand National Assembly to take her oath of office wearing her Islamic headscarf. A near riot ensued; deputies shouted for her to ‘get out’ and banged on their desks, and the Prime Minister of Turkey told the crowd to ‘put this woman in her place!’ Ultimately, she was prevented from taking her oath, persecuted by the government, harangued by the Turkish press, threatened with prison, raided by the police, had her citizenship revoked and lost her seat in Parliament.
The headscarf issue is at the centre of Turkish politics, representative of the tension between Turkey’s military–secular bloc and its predominantly Islamic population. This book not only sets the record straight about this extraordinary and inspirational woman, it reveals in detail the dark side of modern Turkey that has experienced four military coups in the last 50 years and is prevented from entering the European Union. In an era in which misinformation about Islam is causing political conflict in the United States, Europe and the Middle East, Headscarf is a true story that will resonate with everyone who values human rights and free elections, and enlighten those who want to learn more about the Islamic world minus polemics and stereotypes.
This first book ever published in the West about this incident incorporates the perspective of an Islamic woman trying to overcome barriers posed by Turkish secularism and exposes in detail the deep-seated conflict in Turkey between the secular bloc and practicing Muslims.

Well written, this historical work gives the story within the story. The author brings to life history with a very human face and the name of a woman. An act of courage with a high price is woven into the fabric of women standing and being in the forefront now. This woman was even more courageous, she stood for her human right. A half a globe away, the face of another voice was heard. It is a pleasure to meet Merve Kavakci when military met Islamic practice. We must remember her even if we are of other religions. And after reading, Pere's book, you will never forget Merve Kavakci.

Richard Peres does a wonderful job presenting the behind the scenes information about what came to be known as "Merve Kavakci incident" on May 2, 1999 at the Turkish Parliament, as Kavakci was prevented from taking oath of office by the MPs of the leftist party. She was faced with a political lynch campaign immediately after the incident which nowadays is considered as an "undeclared coup."
Peres does an excellent job presenting all sides of the case in an objective manner, enabling the reader to evaluate the various arguments. This work is extremely valuable for academics in the fields of political science, gender studies, Turkish studies, etc as well as ordinary readers who are interested in Turkey as well as the notion of secularism. The facts that the book presents personal accounts of Merve Kavakci including some new information that was never previously shared with the public also increases its popular and scholarly value.
People who are interested in areas such as Turkish politics, gender studies, secularism, should also look into Merve Kavakci's own academic work titled "Headscarf Politics in Turkey: A Postcolonial Reading." The best aspect of the paperback version is its affordable price making it available to academics and students from all over the world. (I had purchased the hardcover for myself and am recommending the paperback for my students and all who are interested.)

Filled with emotion and a great deal of research and interviews with all the important players, Richard Peres draws you into a story of religious freedom and the struggle of women. If you have any interest in Turkey today, history or women's issues, this is a wonderful look at it all.

This is a great read. It sheds light to Turkey's recent history. As a student of politics I was interested in literature on Middle East and Turkish politics. The author has apparently conducted a thorough research on the ground therefore gave a fair account of the dichotomous nature of Turkey's secularism. Many of the books on the Muslim women's hijab in Turkey are outdated while this book provides a fresh look at some of the recent developments in Turkish political history. I recommend it to anybody interested in gender issues and Muslim politics.
