Hey everyone! I found a solution for getting these to work properly on the aluminum macbook pros and iphones!!
The problem is that that the bodies of these are metal and so is the face of the pin, and the headset buddy shorts out on the case of the phone or computer. Many MFG's like RODE have plastic on the base of the 3.5mm jack or use on O-Ring. I solved the issue by using one of those tiny vinyl hair ties my wife has kicking around, breaking it, tying it around the jack and then snipping the ends off. It creates a kind of O-Ring. You have to push the jack in pretty hard to get it to fire up but it works and once in sees to stay. I also tried a tiny bit of electrical tape I cut into a thin strip with scissors but the elastic band thingy works better.
I thought of maybe using liquid electrical tape or something but it has worked so I haven't bothered yet.
Tried two of these so far. Bought one and used it to record some audio to an iphone 6 plus using a Sennheiser ew100 G3 Wireless Lav mic and it worked great. Next time I went to use it, nothing. Couldn't figure it out, and finally broke down and bought another. Guess what. It worked! Then I unplugged it, and plugged it in again a few minutes later to do a test with my wife. Nothing. For some reason, you unplug and it it fries something inside or something. The G3's have phantom power, so I'm guessing it has something to do with that, but I have no idea how you would avoid killing this with wireless mic.
We can say I learned my lesson and that's when I came back to Amazon and decided this was the only way to find the real Headset Buddy adapter that is worth the price. Don't be cheap and go on Ebay guys, stay right here and order this adapter from the source. Glad I can finally record audio for my vlogs on my laptop minus the headache of faulty adapter.
Most of the headsets you find out there are still built for one 3.5mm 3pin stereo and one 3.5mm 2pin microphone. The problem with that is that specially for the computers, you have no alternative than to buy an iPhone compatible headphone, and options are so restricted.
With this plug, I can connect whatever I want to any of my devices. Sound is perfect, the connector is of high quality and firm grip on both female jackets.
I would recommend this to anyone that owns an apple product and wants to use regular headsets.
Thank you Headset Buddy for solving what would be otherwise an even bigger problem.
Overall good quality, and does what it needs to do. Satisfied customer and will buy the 2.5mm adapter for hooking my headset into portable phone and older cell phones.
The quality of the connection was good, while it worked. Unfortunately the quality of the cable that ends with the jack seems to be sub par - it is visually much thinner than the other 2 cables in this adapter and on top of that it does seems very delicate. It gave up after a year of very light use - I used maybe 20 times in total, and I was very careful with it (so no walking around while talking or anything like that). When I try to use it now, the connection is intermittent (I hear the other party on and off, depending how the cable is positioned). I suspect that one of the the wires inside the cable just broke.I don't recommend the product, especially for the price they charge for it.
Just to put things into perspective, the headset that came with my cell phone still works perfectly after 4 years of using it almost on daily basis (that includes using it while walking, running etc).
I like how the inputs for mic and headphone are color coded and also have a pictorial icon to avoid confusion for those who may have color-impaired vision.
Only gave it 4-stars instead of 5 because it's a workaday product with a no-nonsense design. Not something I'm excited enough about to go all the way to 5 stars.
There are more budget-priced alternatives.
I bought this one because their site provides:
1) a product-finder utility to match the devices you have with the adapter you need
2) a video on how to use the product
3) a 100% satisfaction guarantee
The female connectors are reassuringly hefty in weight and seem extra-sturdy.
I'm happy with this purchase.
