There are two types of connector standard, CTIA, which Apple and my Etymotic headphones use, this adapter uses OMTP, they are not compatible. You will get stereo sound, but the mic will not work.
Apple, or CTIA, has the mic on the part of the plug next to the sleeve, and ground on the ring nearer to the sleeve, then right on the next ring and left audio on the tip. OMTP is the same for left and right, but the ground is on the connector near the sleeve and the mic is on the ring near the sleeve.
I'm sure it's a fine product if you need a splitter for an OMTP headset, but the product description is really lacking and misleading.
To sum it up short, it works as advertised. It's just a cord that splits the signal into the appropriate ports. Where people may be having difficulty in using this is a computer-related problem and would have been faced regardless of the headset (or adapter) used. Windows has audio controls in the control panel under Sound which allows the user to adjust speaker, headphone, microphone, etc. volumes/levels independently from one another and separately from the main volume control. You may have to go into Control Panel - Sound and then click the Recording tab. In here, right-click on the headset microphone that is detected when you plug this adapter in (make sure the headset it also connected to the adapter). Choose Properties from the pop-up that comes up from right-clicking. Adjust the levels to increase the recording volume. If you set this too high, though, the audio will distort.
I had to increase my levels before any sound through the microphone registered. This isn't exactly common knowledge to most computer users nor is it easy to figure out on your own if you're inexperienced. As I said before, I haven't spent much time with this yet, but plan to add more info as I use it more.
I get sound out of both cups, but the mic isn't working. That could be because I have it plugged into the front port on my PC or it could be because of the Headset Buddy or it could be because of a driver setting. I'll do some more fiddling and testing to see since another person said he got his to work ok. Until then I'll give it an OK rating since it did at least give me sound.
If I get the mic to work then I'll give it 4 or 5 stars.
One major selling point for me is that this product doesn't require any additional drivers or power supplies, unlike some other PC headsets I've tried. Just plug it into your PC, plug in your headset, and you're good to go.
The mic input occasionally drops out and requires me to unplug everything and plug it back in, probably due to mechanical fit issues. (For what it's worth - it's a low-tech solution but rubbing the inputs with a slightly damp towel or finger and putting them back in works every time.) Annoying, but not too common, and this product lets me use my comfortable phone/PS4 setup with my PC with no hassle or prep time.
That's what I wanted it to do and it does a great job.
