Hey everyone! I found a solution for getting these to work properly on the aluminum macbook pros and iphones!!
The problem is that that the bodies of these are metal and so is the face of the pin, and the headset buddy shorts out on the case of the phone or computer. Many MFG's like RODE have plastic on the base of the 3.5mm jack or use on O-Ring. I solved the issue by using one of those tiny vinyl hair ties my wife has kicking around, breaking it, tying it around the jack and then snipping the ends off. It creates a kind of O-Ring. You have to push the jack in pretty hard to get it to fire up but it works and once in sees to stay. I also tried a tiny bit of electrical tape I cut into a thin strip with scissors but the elastic band thingy works better.
I thought of maybe using liquid electrical tape or something but it has worked so I haven't bothered yet.
Tried two of these so far. Bought one and used it to record some audio to an iphone 6 plus using a Sennheiser ew100 G3 Wireless Lav mic and it worked great. Next time I went to use it, nothing. Couldn't figure it out, and finally broke down and bought another. Guess what. It worked! Then I unplugged it, and plugged it in again a few minutes later to do a test with my wife. Nothing. For some reason, you unplug and it it fries something inside or something. The G3's have phantom power, so I'm guessing it has something to do with that, but I have no idea how you would avoid killing this with wireless mic.

The wired headphones/headsets that come with the iPad/iPhone work fine in this jack also, but I was looking for better performance while watching movies, listening to music and using Skype.
I have completely lost all hope for bluetooth except in very limited cases. (Mostly in handsfree on the iPhone).
The USB based headsets work also but none work quite as well as their wired versions. The worst problem I had with the USB headsets was on Skype when pops and various noises would just happen randomly. Very annoying to those on the call.
So I purchased this adapter for my Mac Mini and it worked perfectly in allowing me to use the various expensive headphones/headsets that I have purchased over time. I use it on Skype, enjoying movies and listening to music.
Happily I discovered that this adapter also worked will my entire assortment of iPhones, iPods and iPads. In fact it was so useful that I am on my third adapter as I was tired of moving the adapter from device to device.
Having used these adapters for over six months the build quality seems as good or better than other adapters that I have purchased. I have not experienced any problems with them so far. I still yearn for high quality reliable wireless connections but until that day arrives I highly recommended this adapter for wired use.
Overall quality and sound is amazing. Although the description claims that output in stereo is left-channel only, I recognized left & right stereo output sound from the headset. The 3.5 male adapter has a 4 ring TRS (Tip, Ring-Ring, Sleeve), so stereo output may be dependent on either the headset or media player capability. Output L/R stereo sound from my iPod and mobile device was clear and flawless. Mic was clear on calls.
The female input ports are a snug fit, and I suspect this is to ensure optimal sound quality.
The only drawback is it's an extra cord, and adds a bit of bulk to the line. However, the quality and functionality far outweigh the extra bit of geeky wire baggage. Conversely, its a few extra inches of cord length if needed.
I could not be more pleased with this purchase. In fact, I bought the PC to 2.5 Headset Buddy so I could use my AWESOME PC headphones at work on my VoIP phone. Avoid the regrettable cheap imitations. My only mistake was waiting too long to purchase this handy adapter. Headset Buddy is the ideal high-quality solution. Well worth the $15 bucks - highly recommend.
First, the connector seems to be low quality. It isn't gold-plated, which means it will oxidize and the connection will become noisy and unreliable. This started happening to me within the first two months of using it and people I called started complaining about my voice being static-y or garbled or dropping out whenever I moved my phone around too much.
Second, the wiring inside doesn't seem to be well done either. After four months of use I now have to squeeze on the Apple-end in order to get stereo sound, as the left channel seems to have become loosely wired inside the jack.
I can't find any alternative adapters, but I'm looking. I don't really want to buy another one of these as fighting the adapter to keep my headset working defeats the convenience of using my PC headset. There just don't seem to be many, if any, alternatives.
