Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
Former public relations executive Guyol was determined to be free of psychiatric medication that caused dangerous side effects; that was the catalyst for this guide to the most effective natural remedies for depression and bipolar disorder. Highly detailed sections on frequently overlooked contributors to mental illness relate how many factors—low blood sugar; thyroid disease; allergies; vitamin, mineral and hormonal imbalances; Candida albicans; parasites; excess caffeine and sugar consumption; and environmental toxins—can cause or exacerbate mental illnesses and such conditions as autism, ADHD and autoimmune diseases. Guyol describes now common alternatives (yoga, meditation, reiki, affirmation, homeopathy) as well as those unfamiliar to many mainstream physicians (glyconutrient supplementation, Nambudripad Allergy Elimination treatments, Mahikari no Waza). The focus is not only on treatment but on recovery. In moving real-life stories, readers will meet people whose illnesses left them incapable of basic functioning yet they continued their search for healing, discovering alternative and mainstream healthcare providers with whom they partnered. While no single treatment cured them, a combination of helpful supports restored their mental, emotional and physical capacities. Guyol's respectful presentation of their tenacity in the face of great obstacles is, perhaps, the main strength of this effort. (Aug.)

This book gave me a lot of ideas. It gives stories snout people who were pretty much over medicated, then they found alternate ways it fix themselves. Sounds pretty good right? Like I said, I just took the ideas and mixed them with the lowest doses of my medications for bipolar. Took a lot of tweaking and arguing with docs, but in my opinion, alternative therapies mixed with whatever medication works best for THE SPECIFIC INDIVIDUAL is what works. Think about it. How can one brand of medication be THE perfect bipolar medicine when everyone is different physiologically? Anyone who has bipolar and is not happy with your meds...argue with your doc! Do research about medications and side effects, pick the least offensive one, try it and if it doesn't work, keep looking. And definitely try adding in the alternative therapies. They compliment the medication.

Some stuff seemed a tad far-fetched, while most of what I've read so far seems pretty legitimate. I've found supplementation to helpful with my own well-being (melatonin for sleep, coq10, fish oils) and exercise was very helpful when it was more integral to my routine for both mood and sleep. I'm not seeking to eschew traditional medicine, but any tools to add to the arsenal are always appreciated.

Great insight, suggestions, research and stories of med free recovery from bipolar and depression!

I like most of the things in this book! I read it about 4 years ago and still go back to reference it now and then. I disagree on a few points, but respect the author's courage to speak her mind and give concrete examples. Reading this book and doing just some of the things it suggests could completely heal your bipolar or depression and lead you into med free living. I have been med free bipolar for over ten years and actually use one of the things she recommends to maintain zero symptoms day-to-day.

I have been managing bipolar depression naturally for the last seven years. I still struggle, but this book helps open your mind to different things to try and experiment with.

While waiting for a friend at the library, I started poking around and stumbled on this book. Although I'm neither bi-polar nor depressed, something about this book spoke to me and I even went so far as to get a library card, so I could keep reading it.
I've always been interested in holistic and alternative ways of healing and I firmly believe that doctors should be used sparingly...for emergencies only.
If you appreciate information that's easy-to-apply, inexpensive and could dramatically improve your life, then this book is simply fantastic! I found it so valuable that after I returned it to the library, I wanted my own copy and ordered one from Amazon...my go-to place for just about everything.
Our lives are busy and most of us are tired and stressed out and even upbeat happy people get depressed periodically. Before running to a doctor for prescription medications, we owe it to ourselves and the people we love to do some research and be sensible and intelligent about what we put in our bodies.
Did you know that something as simple as fish-oil can knock out depression? There's lots of great stories, and very helpful information contained in these pages. The book is well written and touches on numerous modalities that have saved lives. Well worth the read!

I haven't read the whole thing, but I did relate to one of the chapters a LOT. So I've been taking a great multi and fish oil and feeling like a whole new person. I am looking forward to reading the rest of this book.

This has been an inspirational book for me The story is autobiographical rather than a colle3ction of Doctors "sucess" stories
The author has done it all, from deep depression and suicide hopelessness to out of control manic behavior. There are many very helpful sources of help listed in the end of the book as well of web sites. One is called "safe harbor" which I found extremly informative.
Have you ever noticed that when you go to a new doctor they ALWAYS perscribe a new drug to add to your existing ones. We people with some form of mental illness are nothing more than a chemistry experiment to 95% of the so called experts on Bipolar
When I am perscribed any new drug by a doctor I tell the doctor "I already tried that one. and i got sick from using it. Instead, lets try reducing my dependence on what I'amalready taking and see if that works first"

This book is not one that is smooth on the surface to read. You must be familiar with many of the terms and having a more advance understanding of exactly what Bipolar is and its effects. I guess I expected more...
