While HEALING HER HEART is a novella, it has all great features of Laura's books: faith, heartwarming romance, and heart-pounding danger. A nurse Larissa Brockman is a very compassionate woman, but she struggles with forgiving those who harmed her or those she cares about. Dr. Gabe Allen is a great hero, but he also has trouble of moving past hurt. There is an important reason of why he doesn't date nurses. But how can he not help and protect Larissa, especially when she's in dire danger, even as the attraction between them grows? Along the way, they bring each other closer to God.
The theme of forgiveness resonated with me, and I found that I've read this book just in time to teach me something important. Larissa's epiphany helped me with something I've struggled with for a long time. And that's what the great books are about: they don't just entertain you - they make you a better person.
All in all, I loved HEALING HER HEART, and I can't wait for A SOLDIER'S PROMISE.
Best bits: The plot arc of the abused woman and her family is well done. Mentions not forcing anyone to come to God, that all you can do is offer and let them choose, even if that is hard. Their medical ethics as well as their Christ-given compassion and forgiveness let them work to save the life of the man who just minutes before was threatening theirs.
Mostly well proofed, with 1 or 2 errors.
Issues: Larissa’s bad experience in Chicago that included a possibly verbally abusive relationship is super vague. Her ability to connect to the abused woman is a crucial plot point, so the lack of specificity seems like a mistake. The romantic relationship springs up from nowhere. It seems fast, even for a short story.
Both Gabe and Larissa are attracted to each other but neither of them want it to go anywhere. Gabe moved to Crystal Lake a year ago with his "pride battered and his reputation crushed". What had happened?
A sweet, Christian based romance that also covers the topic of spousal abuse. (Annie's story in amongst Gabe's and Larissa's) Short, easy read.
