Editorial Reviews

This book is a record of certain events that transpired on - and following - the 9/11 tragedy. We all know about and have images in our minds of the smoke, the fire, and rubble. But this book's author shares a glimpse of what went on in the hearts and minds of New York's fire fighters who were at Ground Zero, and the ripple effect that was felt by others as far away as 3,000 miles. This is like no other book I've read on the subject. I commend her efforts of bringing this to light. --Mayor Alan Autry, City of Fresno, CA

In this book, author Sue Okenyi has captured the spirit that is America through her words, the photos, and the actions of strangers who reached out to lend a helping hand of moral support to those who so courageously helped on that fateful day and every day - New York's Bravest and Finest and the Port Authority. This book shows the affinity, sincerity, and humanity from which this great country was formed and has never been alloyed, even from one of our darkest days in history. --Barry McGuire - Singer, Song Writer, Musician

About the Author

As the 9/11 tragedy began to unfold three thousand miles from her California home, little did Sue Okenyi know that her life would become intricately woven within the lives of so many of New York's Bravest and Finest - FDNY, NYPD and Port Authority officers. This is Sue Okenyi's personal account. She has worked for Pelco for 14 years. In July of 2005, she was named "Person of the Week" by KFSN-30, an ABC Affiliate.

I found this to be a truly captivating book--one that was difficult to put down! In this book, the author, Sue E. Okenyi, shares the personal stories and struggles of some of the surviving NYC fire fighters in the aftermath of the tragic events of 9/11. The author became personally involved with these men via emails and phone calls because of her unique position at her company, Pelco, in Clovis, CA. The book is written in a down-to-earth style, taking the reader into the hearts and minds of those fire fighters and their life and death struggles after 9/11. I highly recommend this book and found it engrossing and moving--a heartwarming story of compassion and transformation. The many photos in the book are an added bonus and help bring the people and places talked about in the book "to life."
