About the Author

Jodie Shield, MEd, RD, is a recipe developer and freelance writer. She has written more than 300 newspaper, magazine, and internet articles on nutrition. Mary Catherine Mullen, MS, RD, provides counseling to professional sports teams, currently the Chicago White Sox, and counsels overweight and diabetic children and their parents at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center. They are partners in JM and Associates, Inc., a food and nutrition communications consulting company and the coauthors of The American Dietetic Association Healthy Eating for Kids. They both live in Chicago.

I recently received this title to review as an E-book for free from Eat Right Press. This was an interesting book to read, very informative.
As a parent of 4, and soon to be 6 as we are adopting 2 additional children, health nutrition is very important to our family. That is why this book caught my eye.
The chapters include topics on:
Strategies for Kids and Teens
Eat with a plan
Turn off the Tube and Move
Pop the Soda Habit
Practice Portion Control
Fill up on Fruits and Veggies
Slow down the Fast Food

One of the things that makes this book great and a useful tool is that not only does it give you the ideas, philosophy, graphs and data but it also gives you workable recipes, and plans to create and put to use the topics addressed.

As parents we MUST set the example for our children. How we act, live, or don't act and live will determine the way our children spend their lives acting and living. Personally I do not want to leave an example of poor choices, and eating habits.

Healthy Eating, Healthy Weight for Kids and Teens is a very informative book with alarming statistics about the obesity epidemic of American children. As a dietitian and mother of a 7 and 9 year old, I found the book to be very helpful in many aspects of our life. The book outlines 8 strategies to work on as a family to achieve the goal of healthier eating. We are a busy family with many activities that interfere with mealtimes and the two strategies we found most helpful were Strategy #1 Eat With A Plan and Strategy #6 Slow Down the Fast Food. I would recommend this book to anyone who is trying to eat healthier as a family, and not just those with kids who are overweight.

Wonderful and informative book- also offers great advice, techniques, reference materials and websites for families in search of adopting a more healthier lifestyle, better eating habits, as well as moving more and keeping active with exercising. This is a fantastic book for parents in need of help and support with teaching our children the importance of eating healthy and maintaining a healthy weight.

This book is a must read for any parent cncerned about their child's or teen's weight. The eight strategies outlined in the book have been scientifically proven to help kids reach and maintain a healthy weight.
