Dr. Bill Nichols, in “Healthy Faith”, provides readers a disciplined means to assess critically their faith and, more important, to pursue a detailed 5-Step process to build and maintain a healthy faith, which will help in dealing with all the challenges, pain, and sadness that beset us.
better understand their faith and how it impacts our lives daily.I highly recommend this book.
Typically, the first test of faith is your belief that God does exist. I have done such an exhaustive study on that question that I know with engineering certainty that He does exist; the evidence is overwhelming. I do not depend on faith for this question. And yet God requires that we have faith and the reason is that it is required to accept the great mysteries and unknowns about God.
Nichols uses extensive lists to cover the subject of faith beginning with the seven characteristics of a healthy faith. Right away you can see where you stand in your faith and see where improvements could be made. Numerous questions Christian ask are covered. Questions such as: “How do I decide what is right or wrong? What is morality? What are the three parents of morals? What happens when my body dies? Is death the end? How do you test your doubts? How do you understand your heart? How do you define good behavior? How do you overcome bad habits? How do you get in on what God is doing? Many of these questions are the subject of whole chapters. This is just a small sample of the questions discussed. The answers to these questions can have a big impact on your faith, either in a positive or a negative sense.
The last question discussed is probably one of the most important: How do you create a Strategic Lifestyle plan? This is something I strongly recommend you do. It reminded me of similar activities of strategic planning practiced in the corporate world. I chose to use the SWOT analysis where you list your Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats in the context of your faith. The difference compared to the examples typically given in books is that this analysis is for your personal situation rather than for an organization. These topics are usually well known about ourselves, but it does help to see them summarized on a single sheet of paper. From there you have a better understanding of faith and the actions you would use to strengthen it. The result is your Strategic Lifestyle Plan, which helps prioritize your thoughts and activities and helps guide you to a more Christian lifestyle.
In summary, Healthy Faith is a workbook on understanding faith and what you would do to increase your faith. I strongly recommend this book for all Christians; however, I recommend the paper version. In my haste to get started, I ordered the book on Kindle and that added some difficulty in highlighting special concepts, and locating and referring back to earlier lists. That may just be my inexperience with Kindle.
