About the Author

Alan Fisher lives in Baltimore. His wife appears on the cover of this book, so Alan wants to dispel the implication that she is the model for any of the characters. Not so. It's just that Alan is a sentimentalist and thinks the photo, evocative for him, represents the spirit of youth and love at the center of the story. Apart from fiction, Alan has also written six guidebooks for hiking and bicycling near major cities. Readers of In Hearing of the Ocean will see that he has drawn on this background to give his main character a pleasant way to ignore what he should be doing. There the similarity ends.

What a delightful stroll down memory lane. Alan Fisher' In Hearing of the Ocean succeeds in bringing decades old memories front and center. He has captured time and context with such clarity that one can't help but re-experience the youthful years of uncertainty, exploration and discovery. One is reminded of early attractions and dalliances, loves and losses, philosophical and political perspectives, along with the historical context that shaped a generation. Like any good novel, the book draws one into the dilemmas and life choices faced by its protagonist. And mimicking life, the story provides no clear outcome for life's challenges and complexity. As such, it provides an insider's view of both the joy and pain of coming of age!

What a quietly profound book! Upon my first reading I was not quite sure what to make of Lloyd and the vignettes into his life. He seemed too nonplussed about what life was happening to him. It was not until the his final letter to Barbara where my questions about Lloyd: what is he about? what does he care about truly? became clear.
Amidst all of the confused emotions at play in the late 60's US, related Vietnam and what that meant for our country's future standing in the world and our discomfort with it... is Lloyd. He is facing his own future, no less dramatic nor less significant than America's: the draft, leaving the safe confines of college, striking out on a less certain path as a writer, losing the love of his life yet not sure how or why, possibly fathering a child... Perhaps he is a microcosmic avatar of what thousands of college age men were going through at the time... navigating the transition from boy to man, clumsily, confidently; not able to make the right choices at the right time but eventually, as Lloyd does, get a sense for how to move forward through life as a man.
I enjoyed the book. Fisher has a command of describing scenes and giving, even supporting characters, dimensions and depth that encouraged me to read further. I wanted to get to know these characters. I look forward to Fisher's next effort.

"In Hearing of the Ocean" by Alan Fisher is an absorbing account of the life and loves of a young man in his twenties, still living the academic life but facing a tangle of problems. Decisions have to be made about his career path as well as in response to the turmoil of the '60s. Numerous friends and associates are an active part of the story, adding much to its interest and scope. The time period covered in the book is a crucial one for him with important decisions to be made and illustrating the long-range effects of these choices. EBW
