She only planned a short visit but instead found herself opening an Amish specialty shop, Heavenly Treasures, and settling in.Claire loves her new home, and she’s slowly making friends among the locals, including Esther, a young Amish woman who works in the shop. So when the store’s former owner, the unlikable Walter Snow, is murdered, and the man Esther is sweet on becomes a suspect, Claire can’t help but get involved.
Newly returned Detective Jakob Fisher, who left Heavenly—and his Amish upbringing—as a teenager, is on the case. But his investigation is stalled by the fact that none of his former community will speak with him. Claire’s connections make her the perfect go-between.
As Claire investigates, she uncovers more than she wanted to know about her neighbors. And suddenly, everything she had hoped to find in this peaceful refuge is at risk...

"Hearse and Buggy" is the very enjoyable first book in Laura Bradford's Amish cozy mystery series. I love both Amish romances and cozy mysteries so was eager to try this series and was not disappointed. Bradford does a great job of showing the Amish way of life - I've read a ton of books and have watched a lot of television specials about the Amish and still learned a few things I didn't know while reading this book. I love both the setting of Diane's bed-and-breakfast as well as Claire's shop. Having Jakob Fisher be ex-Amish is also a great touch and I look forward to his story developing over the course of the series. The description of Heavenly, Pennsylvania is well done and well written - I felt like I was there while reading the book. Most cozy mysteries have a touch of romance in them as does this book but I was surprised at the twist to the formula that Bradford drew in this book - nicely done. The mystery aspects are nicely done as well - I love it when I read a cozy mystery and try to figure out who the killer is, think I know, and then keep changing my mind - to me this means a book is well plotted - and I was able to do that with this book.
"Hearse and Buggy" is a great start to what looks to be a fun cozy mystery series.
I love a well balanced sweet romance novel, and this one was like a multicolored round swirly lollipop as big as my head. Laura Bradford captivated me with the simple lives of the Amish. She drew me into Claire’s experiences, the depth of her emotions and how the pain of her past was influencing her present. One of my favorite things about the book was how much Claire loved the art of the Amish. I could see the art in my mind’s eye as it was being described. I wanted to feel the texture of the wood as Claire brushed her fingers over the pieces.
The murder mystery kept me wondering all though the story who the killer was. In the end was I wrong or was I right? I’m not saying.
Hearse and Buggy was a wonderful novel and I recommend it to all and sunder. I am definitely ordering her second book in this series Assaulted Pretzel.
Claire isn't the only new resident of Heavenly, PA. The new police detective, Jakob Fisher has returned to his home town. Jakob has broken the tenets of the Amish faith and so he needs Claire's help as a go-between to solve this murder and other crimes in the peaceful town.
The book was so gentle that often I forgot it was a murder case. The victim was disliked violently by both the English and Amish community. There was great attention to detail about the budding romance of Eli and Esther. Eli is a visible suspect in the town's eyes, yet, it is very clearly not him.
For a debut novel this was a great cozy read. Now that we have been slightly tutored in the ways of the Amish, I fully expect the next book will be sharper on the crime committed.
I love cozy murder mysteries and I will be reading more of this authors mysteries in the near future. If you love to read cozy murder mysteries I recommend Hearse and Buggy for your reading pleasure.
Top reviews from other countries
while this book was a bit slow it was a nice read
I did guess wh did it from very near the beginning but didn't know for sure
It will be interesting to read more in the series to follow Claire & Jakob & other people in the book
so if you like easy going mysteries then this maybe for you
Also very informative because I know so much more now about the Amish then I ever did.
Looking forward to reading the next book
