A Printz Honor Book
Each step on Annabelle’s 2,700 mile cross-country run brings her closer to facing a trauma from her past in National Book Award finalist Deb Caletti’s novel about the heart, all the ways it breaks, and its journey to healing. Because sometimes against our will, against all odds, we go forward.
Then…
Annabelle’s life wasn’t perfect, but it was full—full of friends, family, love. And a boy…whose attention Annabelle found flattering and unsettling all at once.
Until that attention intensified.
Now…
Annabelle is running. Running from the pain and the tragedy from the past year. With only Grandpa Ed and the journal she fills with words she can’t speak out loud, Annabelle runs from Seattle to Washington, DC, and toward a destination she doesn’t understand but is determined to reach. With every beat of her heart, every stride of her feet, Annabelle steps closer to healing—and the strength she discovers within herself to let love and hope back into her life.
Annabelle’s journey is the ultimate testament to the human heart, and how it goes on after being broken.

I feel trigger warnings are very important. But as they are a spoiler for this particular books, I will leave them at the bottom so you can look at them in you are concerned for any possible triggers.
Annabelle has gone through trauma that has left her changed forever. The only way Annabelle knows how to maintain some semblance of control is to run. She has been seeing a counselor to help cope with her trauma, but she is still not the self she was before it all happened. Her running is a journey she takes alongside her trauma, and like anyone who experiences trauma, you take it one day at a time, everyday you think you can't make it and deal with setbacks that take your mind back to when everything came tumbling down. The journey she took with her running was a symbol of perseverance and survival in when you feel like it's impossible.
This book handled trauma very delicately and only alluded to what our character went through until the last part of the book, when they reveal to you what happened that shattered her life. In the author's delay of fully explaining the trauma, I began to feel the process of trauma is universal (in spite of the triggers being different for everyone). Trauma takes your breath away time and time again, it is something you live with and struggle with regardless of what the trauma is. This made me feel we are all united in trauma regardless of the face it wears or the weapons it's used to destroy us. This feel made this book distinct to me and memorable.
I love this book so much, and I loved all the parallel stories. It was lovely and it touched a cord in me.

TW: Gun Violence, Murder, Harassment, PTSD, Animal murder,
There isn’t much that I can say about A Heart in a Body in the World because it is such a beautiful story and it really speaks for itself. Annabelle Agnelli is a senior in high school who decides to run across the country from her hometown of Seattle, Washington 2,700 miles to Washington D.C. She’s not really running for a cause, she’s not fighting to raise money, or gain supporters for something. She is doing it because she needs to do something in her life, she went through trauma and she just feels like she has to do something for herself. As she runs she gains supporters from so many people, her family and friends, but just also people who have felt inspired by her. She learns how her one small action can still be her one small action but also how it can be and mean so much more. It’s a beautiful story about looking something in your life that feels impossible, and maybe not overcoming it, maybe not going back to “how things were” but learning how to run forward. Understanding how much it hurts now, and learning how it won’t always feel this way.
I feel that everyone has something to gain from this book and I couldn’t tell you what because this is just one of those stories that everyone will pull something different out of it. I would recommend this book to just about anyone with the maturity to handle some mature topics.
Thanks to Edelweiss+, NetGalley and Simon Pulse for the opportunity to read and review A Heart in a Body in the World by Deb Caletti!
This story captivated me with it’s mysterious, traumatic event and the strength of the main character and supporting characters. Also, the charm and humor of family and all the quirks that go along with that wonderful six letter word. The story is somewhat difficult to follow; I’m sure that was on purpose by the author because the back and forth, scattered thoughts represent the stress of the main character very well. A heartbreaking and inspiring story that fully reveals the event by the end of the book. 5 stars for this deeply moving realistic fiction!
