I especially loved her characters because her descriptions of Clay reminded me often of my own husband some physically & many personality-wise and her descriptions of Callan just made me want to help her see how wonderful she was.
Then just as you feel a deep sense of satisfaction because they triumph over past problems, Clay has an accident. At this point I almost stopped reading the book because of the intense pain I experienced as I thought Callan had lost her husband. This was quite possibly more difficult for me than many readers because I really did lose my beloved husband several years ago. I almost closed the book because I didn’t think I could bear reading a book of losing a spouse and then finding love with someone else. I really struggle with those kinds of books because of my own personal feelings toward my husband & my belief that death is not the end of marriage. I kept thinking, “She can’t lose him! This would be a horrid book if she loses him!” Thankfully, although it gave heart wrenching moment after moment through that portion of the story, she did not lose him!
***END OF SPOILER***
The struggles through the last half of the book or so were different because you don’t get the feelings of a fragile relationship. You know their love will get them through it all.
Thank you to the author for writing this clean yet passionate story of believable characters with believable challenges!
I found the author's over-use of the physical descriptions of both the hero and heroine finally tiring and unnecessary.
Without delving into spoilers I found it rather a stretch that the heroine hid one of the most traumatic events in her life from her husband especially since it intimately involved them both! (This same event occurred in our own married life and I personally cannot imagine sharing and supporting my spouse)
I skimmed much of the latter part of the book because it seemingly contained a lot of what I would describe as 'fluff' that did not add a great deal to the story line.
The ending to the story was also suspect in that the hero secretly planned an extravagant event right under the nose of his wife without her being aware of it, especially since she was in the event-planning profession herself. It undermined the previously intelligent, savvy and highly aware personality of the heroine making her seem suddenly clueless and naïve.
Finally, I kept anticipating a child for them which never materialized, a final disappointment.
After all of this, the author is STILL one of my favorite contemporary authors. In light of the fact that Heart of Clay has received multiple 5 star reviews makes it a desirable read. Simply because it did not mesh with my peculiar sensibilities does not make it a bad read.
Boy the ups and downs in this story really had my emotions going.
The couple is married but they are having trouble and have been for a few years. They go though those ups and downs but nothing prepared me for the things that happen to each of them as they get their romance going again then it stops and then more trouble brews. I told you it had many ups and downs but you root for this couple all the way as you just know they are meant to be together.
It has all the kinds of things that make a great story. Every couple goes through things and some find their way back to each other and some don't.
It is a real life like story that could easily happen to a couple at any part of history but more so in modern times where divorce is easy and staying together is not easy, always.
I am glad this one works out and I can relate to the ups and downs of married life myself. So my emotions did run the gamut of good to bad to good and in between.
I loved this story and I highly recommend it to anyone and those of you that already love Shanna's stories should read this if they haven't.
Clay rememberers the first time he saw his wife, she was the one he wanted to spend the rest of his life with . Callan has changed so much over the last few years, he can’t figure out exactly when or why but he can’t live this way !! Little does Clay k ow the secret Callan has carried buried inside, destroying herself and her marriage.
The Heart of Clay is a Beautiful written story of a love so special, you’ll cheer for them, cry with them and fall in love all over again!!

The book starts with a relationship of over 13 years going through some troubles, we are taken back to when the couple first met and their love is strong. We are told that Callan has low self esteem (due to her mother although this is not explained satisfactorily) but she is very good at her job and is making a success of her own business as an events organiser. Her husband, Clay, is drop-dead gorgeous but they have trouble seeing beyond the rut their marriage has become. Callan has kept a secret from Clay and this also causes problems when it rears its ugly head as secrets are prone to do.
They both start working on their relationship and are gradually regaining their love for each other when life throws them another curve ball.
Some of the story is predictable, some of it is a clichéd romantic tale but still an enjoyable read, skipping the typos and repetitions, I enjoyed the book as I read it.
I loved the characters and the story.
This story made me cry more then once. But in the end..... Well you will have to see for your self. It was a good read. I enjoyed the book.
There were a few eras but early over looked. A few didn't spoil the book for me.
I recommend this it was clean, and no sexual messing around. It is a good Christian story. For that I thank you there should be more writers to get the story out with out adding smut. I give this book 3 1/2. Stars. Due to some mistakes, and a little bit of drag, but not to much.
