First Blade - Well-written, interesting characters, story draws you in, the fight scenes believable and exciting. Only complaint - sometimes the vulgar language wasn't necessary; yes, the main character has a few issues, but you're in her corner. I read this book, and First Witch, in one sitting. Get First Witch, it surpasses First Blade.
First Witch is better than First Blade, which is a good, standalone book, too. A standalone continuation from FB, just as well-written, full of interesting, believable characters - even the known and unknown enemies. Packed with fast-paced excitement and a couple of twists. I couldn't put the book down. Again, only complaint, sometimes the vulgar language wasn't necessary. It has a lot more sex than FB did.
There is a third book coming. FW is standalone, as is FB, but, at the end of FW, Ms. Hinchey lets you know there's more to come. Hot dog! If you love Butcher and Harrison, you'll love Jane. I signed up as a reviewer for FB and FW. After my 5-year-old Kindle died, with the only copies of many of my ARCs, Ms. Hinchey graciously gave me another copy of FW. FB was a PDF off some website.
All in all, I enjoyed the plot, both the content and the pacing. In a way it was a SciFi-lite book, and would be a great choice for someone who enjoys romance and maybe wants to branch out into SciFi without getting lost in the technical jargon full fledged SciFi often relies on. I felt the romance was really a secondary plot line, but it needed to be in order to allow Indigo to resolve things from her previous life. The ending, while not a cliffhanger, certainly left some room open for a continuation of the story, and I sincerely hope Ms. Hinchey follows through with a sequel. This review is for an ARC of the book.
I am a huge fan of hers and am enjoying watching her grow into a wonderful author. It's a rare opportunity, not to mention quite a treat, to get to watch someone practically from their beginning as they become an authentic and recognized author. Keep 'em coming, Jane!
