Editorial Reviews

This was stunningly, beautifully executed, effed up twists and all. One thing that initially put me off, but that I ended up truly loving, was the invented language of Atriia.  It was disconcerting at first, but as the story progressed, the language became second nature for the reader just as it did for Christine.  I personally think that this was a brilliant move on the author's part, because it really helped to not only immerse you into the world of Atriia, but also helped connect with Christine as she struggled to learn the language and adapt to the differences between Atriia and our world. ―The Romanceaholic

Fawn Bonning's, The Heart of Hannen, is a marvelous and intricate tale that is deep and rich with imagery.  Her characters are living, breathing people, heroes and villains alike, and her story is original and highly creative. ―Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite

OMFG!!! This book was very intense. Escaping Reality Within Pages

The tale is twisted and dark, even a little horrific at times, bringing together a perfect mesh of storytelling that is just downright magical. ―AngelsCryHavoc

Holy Fraigens! ―Kindle Reader

From the Author

Perhaps it's because I was a singer for so long, my writing must flow like a song. I will rewrite a sentence again and again until it has the right rhythm.

*In regards to the Atriian language. It is 95 percent English, so it is fairly simple to follow. Of the remaining 5 percent, 4 percent is self explanatory (aya=yes, naya=no, and so forth) and a dictionary can be found at the back of the book to help with the remaining 1 percent. Don't let this simple challenge keep you from experiencing The amazing Atriian Trilogy.

I really enjoyed this book! I won it from my first Goodreads giveaway! *-*

I must admit I first judged it by its cover. I thought it might not be so well-written, but I was very mistaken. It was fantastic. I loved the story and the characters.

I really enjoyed seeing how the main character, Christine, grew up! She suddenly finds herself alone in this strange, unknown place called Atriia, where everything is different from Earth. She deals with rude, aggresive, male-chauvinists and strange social costumes, not to mention the weird food and language, but manages to adapt quickly, and very well. I'm not sure I would've been as strong as she was.

Hannen found his way into my heart from the very start. (and when you read it, you'll see exactly what I mean with 'from the very start'). Such a complicated, strong, sweet character. Very well thought of and developed.

I was a bit confused at first with the new 'language' the author introduces to us, but eventually I got the hang of it. (It was only afterwards that I noticed there was a glossary at the end of the book. Silly, slow little me. >.<)

It was a dark, dramatic and sad book, but also very touching. Needless to say, I cried. Hard.

Of course, I wish I could have changed the ending and maybe have seen a bit more of a couple of characters, but it was still great. The book is a bit long, but it's not tiring at all! This one is a keeper. :)

I'm SO glad I had the chance to review it, otherwise I might have never heard of it. Thank you, Fawn Bonning!!!

Now, you! Go ahead and get it, you'll love it too.

The Heart of Hannen is billed as an adult Fantasy/Romance. (Adult as in 18+, not "Adult" as in XXX.) I think it falls more in the Horror category. The last thing I read that was this twisted was my last Stephen King novel. Seventeen-year-old Christine is "the town psycho" and can't find a way to fit in with her family or her classmates. When she finds herself quite literally in another world (Atriia), she realizes that her life was actually pretty good and she didn't appreciate what she had. She then risks everything to attempt to return to her family.

I haven't read a horror (I guess you can call it Dark Fantasy, but it's pretty much the same thing) novel in a long time, and I kept expecting things to be "happy" and that didn't happen much in this book. This book is well-written and I'm looking forward to reading the next book to see what happens next, because even though there was a pretty major twist that wasn't fully explained, I'm not really sure where the plot can go from here. It'll be interesting to see.

Update 6/27/11: It *was* all explained. I asked Ms. Bonning about it and she (kindly) reminded me of all the clues in the story that I didn't put together. I'm still looking forward to the second book. :-)

There is a glossary at the end of the book for the Atriian language. You'll need it. Some of the words are intuitive and it's pretty easy to pick up the language once you see the words a few times, but you don't want to try to read this book without the glossary.

This book does contain some sex (though it's not the focus of the book) and a lot of blood and violence.

This is an explosive "can't put it down" kind of book that keeps the reader hooked from the beginning. The story is exciting with characters that are full of action, suspense, and passion. Christine may appear brave and strong, but she is haunted by fear and doubt. The characters and story line in this book are powerful and I look forward to more from this author.

*I received this book from the author for an honest review*

Wow. Not what I expected. With The Heart of Hannen, Fawn Bonning created quite a fantasy adventure. I was enthralled the whole way through! I wish I could have read it faster, but as a mother that's not always possible.

Our main MC, Christa, after a swim in her pond out back, ends up in a different world, one that they call Atriia. It differs from our world, with it's language and animals. They also seem more like the people from back in the day without technology. They don't have phones and stuff, but the people seem the same as us, but more brutal. Women are specially treated with brutality. Christa learns this quickly. Her time in Atria is not pleasant. There she learns the true meaning of loneliness, misery, and shame.

I really liked our MC, Christa. She has a fire/anger within her that she sees as something bad, and I can relate to that. While I don't lash out physically like her, I do have a tongue like her. She was refreshing compared to all the perfect MC's you read about alot.

Another thing I loved was the plot. There's so many twists and turns in this book, I never could guess what would happen next. Then that ending, and who the Freign Dropper is revealed as, OMFG!!! This book was very intense.

Only one thing bothered me with this book. In the world of Atriia, as I said above, they have a different language then us. Not too much different, but different non-the-less. There is a dictionary in the back that will help you learn it, but with how fast I wanted to read it, I did have some difficulties. I got confused and had to go back. It was annoying. It did give the story that more of it's own originality though, which always makes it stand out.
