My only minor qualms were that it definitely... feels like a side story to a larger one, if that makes sense, in that it kind of assumes you know who all of these people are, and how the world is laid out? As characters kept entering, I found it a little hard to follow who everybody was and what they wanted. I have no real right to talk here, ha, given my huge casts (LIKE, NONE) - but I just kind of felt like... I was supposed to come in knowing more than I did? So that, with the relatively minimal descriptions, I think, kept me from getting as immersed and invested as I wanted to.
Of course, all that might be fixed by reading the actual book from which this stems (The Absolutes), so I'll have to give that a try at some point! (And then maybe come back and give this another go too!)
I love Chace Verity's worldbuilding and the fun feel of this plot. My favorite thing about MY HEART IS READY, though, is the characters and the way this journey helps to shake out their relationships with one another.
Now, I'm highly in favor of both romantic couples. I love Lester's voice and cheekiness--he's funny and sweet, and loves solemn Sylvia for who she is. Corsine and Tris, though? I don't know, there's something that feels really fresh and lovely about a devoted, sexy, established f/f couple who are working through their relationship on the page. Sure, one's a magician and one's a siren. But I find them to be so relatable and just, well, yeah, HOT.
I love the friendships in this novella as much as I love the romances. From Corsine and Lester, who are still friends after dating--and still have issues to resolve--to Corsine and Sylvia, there are so many lovely friendship pairings in this story. Even Corsine's fox, Blossom, is not left out of the mix.
MY HEART IS READY is such a lovely way to end 2017 on a light, hopeful note. MORE PLEASE.
While the romantic plot lines are fantastic, I think my favorite parts of this book are how it explores friendship and honesty and acceptance. Some of these characters are pure honey with their golden hearts, but I have such a soft spot for Lester, who means well but struggles with his intentions and doing the right thing at times. Who would have thought I'd relate so much to a rumor-craving, snack-loving, self-obsessed, self-proclaimed harpy king!
Sylvia is another favorite of mine. She's strong, straightforward, and loyal, but a bit bristly, which could have been hard to relate to, but her struggle to open her heart and embrace forgiveness really touched me.
I adored this novella, and I can't wait for the rest of this series!!!
Ugh, basically this book is amazing and fun and everyone should read it~!
