The book is marvelous. The villains are other worldly in their villainy. In fact, some of the passages are downright chilling. The author verges on being a certified wordsmith in her turns of phrase and the intensity of dialogue between characters. The characters themselves are mostly non-human ( specks, murdocks and other assorted creatures). But after a time as opposed to being silly the reader, at least this reader, begins to detest the detestable creatures, cheer the heroic ones and pity the pitiable ones ( that poor sheep man - what a dope ).
There are very few fantasies out there that have given me the same visceral, almost jaw dropping response as parts of this book have ( the only good speck is a dead speck ). And the good guys, ( and cross species, half cast good things ) at times seem totally inadequate to the evil challenges before them. Wake up! Wake up!! Wake up!!!
I don't know if this author has a small or large following. There are very few reviews. I will also note that the book has numerous typos and grammatical errors ( I'm willing to bet that Drakite, The Dark God had something to do with this ). This is usually a good sign of a self publisher ( or a lousy editor ). But I would like to think that the author has much future success on the horizon. Buy the book and read it. If you don't like it you can always blame the crotchety old man.
The characters return to continue their struggle against evil magic and monsters lurking in every shadow. And some of these monsters are very scary that sent shivers down this reader's spine.
And this reader was there with every character, right in the heart of the action, feeling everything the character felt. That takes talented writing and I have no doubt this author will go far. This fantasy series deserves all the great attention it deserves and should be snapped up by Hollywood.
FIVE STARS for this epic fantasy and very highly recommended.
Most of the questions are not quite answered in this book. Yet, Ellen Mae Franklin weaves a tale that keeps you coming back for more. I love her work. She is a great author from down under. I cannot wait to finish book 3 and want to read book 4 which she is currently in the midst of writing.
Though I recommend the book if you love Epic Fantasy, I still found a few errors that distracted me. Must be my inner editor.
