Heart of the World is one of my favorite books (competing with Scott Hahn's The Lamb's Supper and James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (I'll admit that it's an eclectic mix)). It's a beautiful, poetic reflection on the Sacred Heart and on Christ. As a piece of literature, this stands out both because it's written well and because of it's inverted structure, which will provide a mystical, contemplative journey through Christ's life. This book is a welcome addition to any Christian's repertoire, and provides a great reflection for those seeking Christ.

On my desert island I would have lots of Verdi and Puccini to listen to, preferably featuring Jussi Bjorling. For reading Dickens and Nial Williams. And for spiritual substance if I could have just one author it would be von Balthasar. "Heart of the World" presumes a background in Catholic spirituality. If you love Thomas Merton as I do, you will feel very much at home with Father von Balthasar; almost as if Merton has opened your mind to the possibility, indeed the necessity of the spiritual life. In my case it is as if Merton opened the door and von Balthasar is leading me through. In much of his writing his scholarly approach can be daunting even if you have a background in Thomistic Theology. But in this book he opens his heart and becomes less a teacher and more a spiritual guide. I have read barely 25 pages but if I were to be exiled to that desert island I would make sure that this book came with me (along with Jussi)!!!
Also recommended are his book on prayer and "Dare we believe that all men may be saved" I'll write a more full review when I finish the book. Peace to all.

Epic and powerful. Wish this was also available in ebook form. I will provide a quote:
"And because I, whom at once are Spirit and Love, am myself the battlefield between God and the world, the battle is already and eternally won in me. Our wrecked covenant - our blood-wedding - the red wedding of the Lamb - is already, here and now, the white bridal bed of divine love."

It has been a while since I read this but it was good. I like Hans, the way he writes. It is in my 5 books to take when I have to go to the nursing home.

I think the best way to describe this work is to use the translator, Erasmo Leiva's own words: "For Balthasar, as for Kempis and all genuine Christians, the saint is first and foremost the one who renders constant thanks for having been loved and who never forgets the misery of once not having loved or let God love. The joy and peace of Christ cannot be conjured up at will by an obsessive desire for happiness. They follow only from our deliverance out of a private abyss of illusion, and they are perfected by our groping attempt to be worthy of such a Lover..." Indeed, Heart of the World, aims to walk us through our deliverance by attempting to walk us through Christ Himself.
Quote from the Book:
"Prisons Of Finitude! Like every other being, man is born in many prisons."..."From the grilled windows of the senses each person looks out to the alien things which he will never be."
